was talkin to a mechanic who was going to polish crank shaft and he said take off crank shaft gear and install the one your gonna run because they ,the cam and crank were a matched set....i dont really believe that but thought i would ask,,,,is that true......i need to change mine cause the gear on the polished crank has pretty rough lookin teeth.....just curious....thanks for input.....talk to us jim........dewy

The gears that were run together for years became a set from "living" together. They were a common law arrangement. Changing the crank gear will not hurt anything. Any noise generated will be irrelevant. Send the gnarley gear a dear john letter. Jim

basically he is correct. if one gear is worn so is the other one, and they are worn in together. and yes another used one will work. but it can make noise. its not the best practise to use one with no wear and one with wear.
for example... in a differential both crown and pinion gears must be replaced as a set. they are machined as a matched set.
even tires on a dual axle must be matched. if one is slightly larger than the other mate, that one will wear down smooth in no time due to the different circumference in both tires. but it will work... but not for long.
so its your call as you can see the condition of all your gears.

Perhaps you all know this, but it is the SMALLER tire that wears out on a mis-matched dual. The larger tire has the most traction and will drag the smaller tire along.
A 10:00 X20 or 11:00X22.5 tire rotates about 500 revolutions per mile. If the CIRCUMFERENCE (not the diameter) on 2 tires is different by an inch, calculate how far the smaller tire gets dragged per mile. It's unbelievable. Its about 41 FEET! Also consider how much extra fuel it takes to skid that smaller tire for 41 loaded feet, every mile.
