closer and closer to starting the M

Ok,
So got that Farmall M that ran when parked about 18 months ago.

I drained about 3 quarts of oil out of it. Filled it with 8 quarts of SAE 5w 30.

Poured in 2 gallons of 50/50 anti freeze.

Installed a new oil filter and gasket.

Flushed fuel tank, installed new sediment bowl screen and gasket.

removed carburetor and split it open and cleaned it all out, cleaned the inline filter inlet.

Flushed fuel line.

Installed new starter switch.

Bought new spark plugs and gapped them.

Last obvious thing it needs is valve cover gasket. Will order one and install it this week.

This week am getting some welding cable cut for the 6 volt battery. Will cut to lengths and install.

What 6 Volt battery do you guys recommend?

Outside of that, is there any other things to pay attention to prior to giving it a first cranking over?

You might want to pull cap and take a look at it and the rotor and see what shape the points are in and adjustment..

I agree with your questioning of this decision. Old Farmalls do not have the tight clearances and precision bearing structures associated with 2000 or newer cars. I would put 15-40 diesel spec oil in it. It might start easier in the winter (I might even be OK with the choice for a winter in cold climates. Jim

If you insist on keeping it 6 volt, try to find a GROUP 3 battery. That is what was in them when new. It will fill up the battery box which the group 2 WILL NOT. My recommendation is to change to 12 volts negative ground with an alternator.

As for the 2 gallons of 50/50 mix, Not near enough if the cooling system was empty. It takes about 6 gallons to completely refill an M cooling system.

I do not think you can get a grp 3 anymore. Get the highest out put grp 2 you can find. Should be up around 900 cca????

You will need 2/0 cables and good connections too.

I still use 6 volts on mine and it starts fine.
