Is the IH version stamped with the logo? My friend has one left to him from his granddad (vet). Haven't had a chance to check it out.

Technically no it is not stamped with the IH brand logo, it just says International Harvester above the serial number. And there are several small parts marked IHC.
I was the author of the March 2015 Red Power Article and am glad that people have enjoyed it and found it useful. IH garands are only going up in price with full IH parts and correct stock rifles are few and far between anymore, and when found are commanding a pretty good premium compared to the other M1 manufacturers. But they are out there....
