Questions about Farmall 240

Does a Farmall 240 fast-hitch utilize the "small" points like the Super C did? Also, I have seen Farmall 240s with two different wide front end assemblies. Were there two options from the factory or is one of these wide front assemblies from another model or from an after market supplier?
Thanks, I'm thinking about buying a 240 and just wanted to know. Is there anything in particular that I should be checking out when I go look at a 240?

if the front end is swept back, it could be a utility. i have a 240u with a large point fast hitch.

The Farmall 230 was the last of the small point fast hitch tractors. When the 240, the replacement for the 230, came out it was large point, along with its bigger brothers, the 340, 460, and 560. One can still use the small point implements with the 240 utilizing a set of 1/2 inch x 1 inch wide pieces of flat bar as spacers. Those spacers would need to be narrowed at the front to give them a 'point' effect. One can still find factory spacers available.

Big point, and check everything. It's a 50 year old tractor.

The 240 is basically a Super C with different sheet metal and a revamped hydraulic system. Really a rugged old design. Hydraulics are a little overcomplicated, one speck of dust in the wrong place mucks up the whole works. Can't get hydraulic filters for them anymore, just not enough made and not enough left today to justify production apparently.

I have a narrow front Farmall 240 which I restored. Just a couple of very hard to find items (no reproductions available either) is an original battery cover (it doesn't have a battery box just a cover for protection) and the radiator. The battery cove is not a big deal unless you want a "correct" tractor but is among the hardest IH item to locate on this planet. Certainly inquire if the original one might have been removed at some point and placed somewhere as you won't easily find another. No one it appears seems to have a reproduction radiator either so what is on the tractor is what you will have to work with short of salvage yards (Utility and Farmall model use the same radiator). From numerous threads on this forum if the tractor has the cable type hydraulic system (mine has the linkage system which is more common) it will be another nightmare trying to find parts for anything on that system as well. In general you will find that parts specific to a 240 are non-existent for the most part and a earlier post already noted the hydraulic filter and screen which can't be found presently.
I am not a fan of wide front tractors in these smaller tractors so don't know anything about that part except it takes considerable space to turn one around like when raking hay whereas a narrow front will turn on a dime. I really like my Farmall 240 but parts are certainly a real issue once you get away from the engine which is common to other models. Best of luck in your acquisition of a 240, Hal.
