I used graphite packing. I used Google for a how to. All packings are about the same.

Graphite packing can be found at most major hardware stores.

Graphite packing is the same but valve stem packing may be another term used.

I use one turn of small-diameter Teflon valve stem packing, around the stem, just under the nut.

I've found the string on a feed bag works well, wrapped tightly around the threads. It's amazing the uses for that string...I keep several in the truck, deer stand, hanging in the barn...

Before you spend too much time and energy, go price a whole new assembly from Case-IH. Not too many years ago they were priced low enough to make it a no brainer. Might not be that way today.
