IH 1586 pto issue

Just trying to get a feel for how much trouble I am in for. Last year the pto lever in the cab would not latch. I remember asking about it and being told to wedge it with something...which I did and that was ok. Yesterday I was running the spreader and the pto was fine. Finished up and was getting ready to unhook, but I wanted to clear the urea off the spinners. The pto did not operate with the lever full fully engaged. I had shut it off and it was and a few minutes later tried to turn it back on. No noise or anything else. Just dead. Any ideas?

BTW...dual PTO, probably from a 1086 or similar.

Couple things. I was told (by the owner of an IH dealership not a tech) that hydraulics is what keeps them engaged. The reason I asked him is I was buying my 886 from his friend and the pto wouldn't stay engaged. As it turns out my problem was the cab mounts that had shifted. I adjusted it back by the hydraulic fill - the linkage wasn't breaking over center so it wouldn't stay. Mine has logged many PTO hours since and all is well.

Someone will come along and be more help. I'd imagine it will involve hydraulic troubleshooting.

the clutch that engages is hydraulically operated if it is not getting pressure, or if the clutch servo piston is hemorrhaging, it will not function. IIRC the pressure is about 280psi Parts picture should help, No worse than an autor trans. Jim

I would say that you sheared thew tiny pin that holds the two piece valve together . The valve does NOT come out the top of the case like you would think , But it comes out the bottom . There is a plug on the bottom left of the PTO housing that it drops out of . You remove the linkage nut on the top of the spool valve and you have to remove the draw bar support and remove the plug and the spool valve will drop out the bottom and instead of having a one piece valve you will now have a two piece valve .You then go to your friendly local Case I H /newholland or what ever they are callen them selfs today and get a new pin . This can be done with out draining the rear end with little hyd oil loos ya just put the plug back in while you replace the pin. Now the down side of this DIY repair is ya need to reset clutch pressure and ya need the special fitting and a GOOD hyd gauge that will read 600 PSI . You set the pressure once you have the valve back in by turning the valve stem up into the linkage nut and to get the best pressure setting the pressure is best set when the hyd. oil is at operating temp. On a 1586 i would shoot for around 285 PSI HOT at rated PTO speed.

There are two different types of pto engagements mechanisms used. Easy to tell the difference. The one that locks by hydraulic pressure engages by pushing the spool in. The older type pulls spool out and has a over center mechanism. You need to know which one you have to diagnose problem. A dual speed can be either. Original single shaft on 1566 would be hydraulic.
