Neighbor's 1466 has been sitting in the field for over a year. Transmission is locked up. They say that when taken out of "park", the park did not release. When placed in gear and attempted to move, the tranny locked up. They also stated that the only way to release irt was to break the teeth out of the park mechanism. Sounds fishy to me. Any help is appreciated.

Pull the floor board. A pin could have come out of the linkage. or pull the top cover if everything looks good on top.WAS or should have been an easy fix.Might still be. Of coarse it "locked up" in gear.two gears at once. DUH! Yep. "Fishy".

Yes that can be solved or at least so you can move it, thru that top cover. But it's no fun standing on you head, either, but have a someone there to hand a few wrenchs, so u don't have to climb out so much.

Like DeltaRed said pull plate off floor boards and one right beside park brake, probably what happened is they didn't get it out of one range & put it in another. Happens because of worn & incorrect adjustment on linkages and improper shifting. I had some one do that to 1066 of mine it took an hour to fix.

My 11,000 + hour 756 will sometimes "lock up" too. If you go from reverse fast and inadvertantly put a bit of side pressure it
will remain in Reverse while in low range.A bit of careful wiggleing will usually 'fix' it. However sometimes a big screwdriver
is sometimes neede to pry a bit.Last week, the 20,000 hr 1256 did that.I know how to solve/fix that. The notch/'tang' on the
range shift lever is worn. I need to take apart and build up(weld) those areas. Just the same thing as an M that hangs up in
the shift rails. The ball on the shifter is worn. Same fix.

Ya I've had my 1066 get stuck on me too but like you said I can get it out of gear, I had some one else driving and when it got stuck he started banging the shifter and got stuck so bad I couldn't get out. I would guess that's what happened there.

Ok so your locked into two gears and maybe the park loc will not come out . How would i go about getting it out of gear. I would take a 12 ton jack and some blocking and jack up one side to get the tire up off the ground to relieve any binding . Then i would get the access plate off the floor board and see if i could then move the shift linkage on BOTh the HIGH LOW and the REV. Then i would see if i had any action off the park loc . It is posable that the pin on the park lock sheared off and they have a spring loaded park loc and if so let the fun began. I am sure that you will learn a bunch of new words while TRYEN to remove the range cover . Three years ago i fought a range cover on a 1086 for nine hours due to the main pin for the park loc coming half way out of the park loc base and wedged it's self against the back wall of the range transmission and only let the cover come up about 5/8th of and inch . After many attempts of making a tool to fit between the top cove and main frame bent just wright with the correct tapper to get on the back side of the pin and drive the pin back into the base of the park loc was i able to get the top cover off . when you think you have seen it all something will sneak up behind you and hit you in the back of the head hard with a 4x4. This job could be a fifteen min job OR it could turn into a fifteen hour job .

Sorry fellows, it is a 1486, went to look at it today. Got more info, Case/IH mechanic was out to look at it last year. The floor plate of the cab is loose and I had it out, The seat is all loose but still fastened to an inch thick cover whose bolts have been removed, but I can't see anything under there. Linkage rods are all disconnected, and just lying in the cab. The cast iron cover directly below a persons feet has not been touched, but the linkage has been removed from the top of this cover. Don't know what that link does, this thing is too new for my tastes. Engine just overhauled, and with new rear tires. Locked up on the first day back from the engine overhaul, so there she sits, on the level, no slope.

Sounds like someone didn't know what they were looking for and made a mess. They aren't very complicated but if these new mechanics can't plug in their laptop to tell them whats wrong they throw their hands up say it isn't worth fixing. I wish it was close to me.
