666 trans Hydro vs. Gear

ok got a little bet with the neighbor, and one of us is gonna buy the other lunch!I recently repaired the Hydro in my 666 when I refilled it I used Hytran fluid in it as that is what I always used, my neighbor has a 666 gear with a TA in it, he decided to change the fluid in his except he used Tractor supply something called tractor fluid, I told him leave it in the shed and drain it out and put hytran in, he told me I was nuts so I need to hear it from all the experts here whos right???

You are both correct. Your Hydro needs every advantage it can get from the branded Hytran. His, not so much, so just go out with your favorite others to a nice restaurant and split the bill. Jim

Contrary to popular belief, Hytran doesn't have magical properties, and a tractor won't violently reject generic oil like a human rejects an incompatible transplanted organ.

You're fine. He's fine. There are very rare cases where mixing the wrong oils together will cause a reaction between incompatible additives but as long as he used MS-1209 compliant tractor fluid, it is compatible with the Hytran and won't cause problems.

As an afterthought, I must note that the Hytran "Ultraction" you get at the CaseIH dealer today is vastly different from the original Hytran that came in that 666 Hydro in 1973.

BTW, is it really a 666 Hydro? I thought they were called Hydro 70s.

Farmall made the 666 for one year then changed the name to Hydro 70. Same machine. Some say it was to link it to the new 100 Hydro (966). Some say, well, 666.

I have used the yellow 303 fluid from Orshelns for a long time cause it was cheapest and it said it met IH hytran standards. Have a high stack of empty buckets.. Just googled it and 3 states have banned it as it is flush oil that tests show it doesn't meet all the specs it says it does.

Plan was to buy the cheapest hytran from TSC after my overhaul since they are closer. Now I better reevaluate the TSC hytran.

Orscheln's sell the Super S brand. Far as I can tell the Super S 303 fluid just lists a bunch of tractor brand names on the bucket. It does not state that it actually meets any manufacturers' standards. Sneaky sketchy half-truths to fool the consumer...

On the other hand the TSC Universal Tractor fluid does state that it meets MS-1209 specifications, which is the spec for the original Hytran from the 1960's.

IMHO it is perfectly okay in an older dry clutch, gear drive tractor like a 656/666/686.

When you start getting into powershift and hydrostatic transmissions, the cost of rebuilding these pales in comparison to the extra cost of the genuine oil. At least you've eliminated oil as the reason why your expensive powershift/hydrostatic tractor is in the shop.

I will look at the buckets later. As I recall, some hytran oils said they were a 20 weight but I'm not sure 303 listed a weight.
