Farmall H transmission driving shaft end play

I should know better than to assume anything, but is it safe to assume that there should be very little to no end play on the transmission driving shaft? I've got the tractor split, and the belt pulley unit removed.

If I stand right in front of the tractor and look down into the rectangular hole where the belt pulley mounts, I can see the gears, etc. If I push or pull on the driving shaft coupler, there is quite a bit of play, maybe as much as 3/16". If I pull on the coupler, the larger gear appears to rub the bearing case, though I'm not sure as I've not pulled the unit from the tractor.

I know I need to take things apart further to get a better idea of what's going on, but would assume that it's worn bearings?

thanks as always!

You are correct, it needs taken apart more. If you put a thin strip of tape on the intermediate bearing (back end of shaft)
it might keep parts from falling in. The front bearing shoulf=d con]me out frontward. Jim

Yes, you have worn input shaft bearings. Very common.

The upper shaft bearings work as a system. The two input shaft bearings are a stable platform and support the mainshaft pilot bearing. On the back end of the mainshaft is the pinion bearing which holds the back end of the system. Unfortunately they're usually worn out together too. The pinion bearing might be ok but obviously the top will have to come off to see. Since the input shaft bearings are that worn you can count on needing the pilot bearing too. Use a big screwdriver or bar and pry on the end of the mainshaft right in front of 4th gear. Should be virtually no lateral play.

It's a very simple transmission so don't be afraid to get in there. The good news is that those are standard metric bearings and available anywhere in the world.

Thank you both for the advice. Your responses were pretty much what I expected.

Based on the parts diagrams, it looks like I need the following (not including seals, etc.)

Pilot Bearing - ST702 (25mm ID x 44.81mm OD x 14.93mm W)
Rear Drive Shaft Bearing - ST206 (40mm ID x 90mm OD x 23mm W)
Front Drive Shaft Bearing - ST247 (35mm ID x 72mm OD x 17mm W)

[listing them above in case someone in the future has the same questions]

That being said, it sounds like everything will fall apart when disassembling if I'm not careful. I'm working on getting the operator platform removed, so I'm sure that will make fixing this issue much easier.

thanks as always!

Here's a quick follow-up question:

How chewed up do the gears have to be before you would consider replacing them? The tractor used to pop out of 5th gear, but otherwise drove fine (though I never pulled anything with it).

I pulled the top cover and the gears look to be what I would consider to be pretty bad shape.

I've got some pics but am having issues getting them uploaded so when I do, I'll include them.

I've read that replacing the 4th/5th gear with a 7mph 4th gear is a good idea (assuming you can find one).

thoughts are welcome.

thanks,
