working on a Farmall Super A and need a replacement cylinder head. The one we have (very bad pitting non repairable) has 251172R1 stamped on the head. we have a chance to pick up another good head but the stamping is 9052D. will the 9052D head work? we have the step head piston on it.

I may be wrong but I think they are the same. One way to make sure is set the good head on and spin the engine over with out any plugs in the head and listen and watch. If the head does not jump and you do not hear it hitting the head with the piston your very likely to be okay

I have a 251172R1 head that has been shop rebuilt with all new parts plus valve seat inserts. I would sell it at a reasonable price. Shipping might be fairly expensive. I'm located in eastern Tennessee. My email is open so shoot me a note if you have an interest.

9052D was the A head and carried over to the first few Super A tractors. 251172R1 was used on later Super A gas engines. I suspect the "R" number head has slightly higher compression than the "D" number. Otherwise, there is probably no noteworthy difference. Check the combustion chamber sizes in both heads.
