farmall m, oil filter questions? gasket?

Heya,

Just got a new oil filter, and curious which end is top and bottom. One end has a smaller opening with a felt gasket so the center bolt runs through it snugly. Does that snug fitting belong at top or bottom? Also, there was no gasket when I took it off. Is there suppose to be a large o-ring to keep that canister from leaking? If so, can I just fill that lip with RV Silicon and call it good?

The new Baldwin filters, brand, dont come with a new rubber O ring, why i have no idea, but the big end goes down, and silicone would be a good choice, to make your own O ring.

Use a square section seal "0ring" in the slot. The original has probably hardened to the point that it appears to be the bottom of the slot. Dig it out with a dental pic or sharpened 10D nail. if you do not take it out it will probably leak. I would not use silicone on that seal as residual goo can get into the system and cause stoppage. A round ring of the correct major diameter can be used. Jim

Pretty much self explanetory. Big end(hole) on bottom, small end on top. WIX/NAPA dont have 'gaskets' either. :( You have to 'order' the 'gasket' seperately these days.

Charlie, i got a 806, i have had since day 1, you can get buy with one time of not changing the O ring, but dont try it a 3rd oil change, it will get so brittle it will leak, Thats when you need a sharpen nail to dig it out. Thats been my experience, on a M never had one leak.

Use Gum Cutter or any Carb cleaner on the old gasket in the groove it will soften right up and keep from having to dig it out with an ice pick

NAPA P/N FIL5070 gasket works for IH P/N 13728D which is the seal ring for the M's (S/N 59394 and up) that have the smaller filter can. It also works on the A, B, C, H, 300, 350, 400 and 450 (probably more) filter cans. The M's with S/Ns 501 thru 59393 use a bigger filter which use IH P/N 13841D seal ring, I believe the NAPA P/N for it is P/N FIL5067. Good luck.

Don't know what's with NAPA. Sometimes they have a gasket and sometimes not. Stocked up last year with enough to last 3 years, same number you got and the shorter one. Most had the gasket but some didn't. When I complained at the store about the gasket a few years ago they said gasket had to be bought separate. Bought a gasket then and next time a gasket was in the box with filter.

If you reuse the old o-ring, rotate the canister to the previous orientation to reduce the chance of a leak. Put an index mark on before you remove it if needed.

I just bought a wix filter 51172 (short one) for a super A 2 days ago and it had the gasket. I have been probably 50 percent on getting one or not.

The Baldwin filters always come with the gasket. If the gasket is not with yours, contact your supplier.

(quoted from post at 13:13:19 05/21/16) I never change the gasket. Never had one leak.Got 6 of them with that kind if filter.

Charlie, one of these days, you will regret having that philosophy. I spent a couple of hours digging one out many years ago. I now replace the gasket every time.

I am not too sure how to respond about replacing the gasket. I wouldn't recommend trying to substitute silicone for a new gasket which has a minimal cost.

I have been running old W series IH's for 30+ years. When changing oil filter, sometimes the filter came with a new gasket and sometimes not, depending on who the supplier was. Many times (most actually), I did not replace the gasket but would replace it if a new one was provided. I do recall once in a while having a minor weep at the base of the canister, usually corrected by loosening the canister bolt, turning the canister a bit and re-tightening. I am getting more particular with age now and do try to replace the gasket since it is "the right thing to do".

I have a couple older Baldwin PT70's which have the gasket with them but it appears that is not the case now from some of the responses you received. I bought a Hasting brand filter for a Farmall M on Saturday for a friend at the local auto parts store which had the gasket included in the box. You already got replies that the big end goes down and the small end is at the top, Hal.

The short filter NAPA # 1172 comes with the gasket. The longer filter # 1125 does not, nor does the electronic listing indicate what the part number is. If you purchase the 1125 filter you will need to but the gasket, # 5070, separately.
