Got a 706 w291 in for OH. Never done it but have heard of welding a bead in sleeves to shrink making them easier to pull. Anyone here done that?, if so what welder/rod did you use and how? tia john

I never done it either, but seen sleeves out of a 71 series Detroit. I would use a 6013 at low heet, those slevves are mighty thin, where the Detroit slevves are much thicker .

Have done it lots of times, using a Lincoln 225, 6011 rod, set on 90, start at the bottom, don't stop, and don't bring the rod over the top of the sleeve. If the crank is still in, cover it good with plastic, then wet rags. On really tight sleeves like an 806, you might have to weld two sides.

Get the correct puller or take to a guy who has the right equipment, it would suck to another block ruined this year over being cheap. Kid I know not far away ruined one a couple months back...nuff said

I got a otc sleeve puller off ebay for just over 4 hundred. Had to remove everything on top that was in the way as it is a three foot long pulling shaft. A good investment. I would split next time as I felt it takes almost as much time and then you can get at the crank bearings and the seals which I should probably have changed as long as I was that far in the motor. Welding seemed too risky.

Thanks guys, I've got the correct puller & die, just don't like that 1st "pop" when sleeves come loose.Block is stripped and on bench.
