wiring of SM Ammeter

How can you tell on a ammeter which is positive and which is negative? I'm wiring up the sm with new lights and ammeter, when I turn the lights on the first time the ammeter went to pos so I reverse the two wires then it went neg. When I started the tractor up it went neg, I rev it up and it still stayed negative. Does this mean my generator is not working or do I have the wires on backward? This tractor is a 12v neg ground. Sorry for all the questions.

If when not running the lights turned on makes it swing to - discharge THATS RIGHT. The SUPPLY side of the ammeter typically has JUST ONE WIRE that's to the hot ungrounded battery post often via a wire to where big battery cable wires to starter switch or solenoid input. The other LOAD side of the ammeter wires to BAT on the Voltage Regulator PLUS feeds the BAT INPUT terminal on light and/or ignition switches.

DID YOU POLARIZE THE GENNY ???????????? If not try that first!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MAKE SURE THE VR IS WELL GROUNDED

If she don't charge run my Charging Troubleshooting Procedure which includes in Para 5 the ground of the Gennys FLD to see if that makes it it charge and can show if non charging is the fault of the genny or VR or other causes
