Farmall 230 charging issue

Over the winter had our 230 apart fixing a few odds and ends, painted it and am now in the home stretch. Currently having issue with it charging. I have replaced the wiring on the tractor as it was pieced together, the regulator is new and generator was checked out locally and was said to be good. Start the tractor shows a slight charge. Turn lights on shows discharge. Lights off I can unhook the negative cable and it will stay running so its obviously charging. My guess is the generator is putting out a charge but not high enough for the lights as well or do I potentially have something wired wrong? Thanks in advance

A person should NEVER unhook a battery cable to check for a generator or alternator is charging it tends to let the smoke out and with a alternator can cause death if you get between the cable the battery in such a way it shocks you. To check for a working system a meter is the only way you should check it.
That said did you polarize the generator??

Voltage should be 12.6 (or 6.3)when stopped fully charged. Running at 2/3 throttle it should be 14.2 to 14.4 (7.1 to 7.2) As old indicates, do not disconnect the battery when running, the battery is a control on voltage. Jim

If the genny is actually okay as you state???? the VR may be bad or its not wired right or the VR may not be well grounded. INSURE THE VR HAS A GOOD GROUND.

Is it Pos or Neg ground??? I ask cuz the genny shop may have polarized and checked it at opposite what your tractor ground is, but polarizing the genny should have cured that.

Sure its the correct VR for the genny????????????

See how she charges if when running you dead ground the Gennys FLD post??? If it charges good then but NOT otherwise the VR may be bad or wrong one or its not well grounded.

Work through my Troubleshooting Procedure and post back, Sure the belt is good n tight???

You're tractor will run off the battery until its dead without a generator so thats not an indication of charging.

Since the tractor is newly painted. I'm guessing your regulator is not grounding correctly. It must have a good ground to work.

As stated earlier ground the FLD terminal on the generator. This will bypass the regulator. The generator will put out well over 14 volts if it's good. If it doesn't you need to look at the wiring or generator.

Read the post. He said he disconnected the cable and it kept running. That is an indication that it is charging.

I worded that incorrectly I jump the wire at the regulator to polarize the generator. It is still the 6v positive ground system. Wiring is as follows. Negative from starter terminal goes to ammeter. From ammeter to the battery terminal on regulator. F on regulator to f on generator. Gen on regulator to other gen post. L on regulator to on switch. Lights are on the same side of the on switch and then pulling the button out connects the coil for power. At rest tractor shows 6.5v, start it it will go to 6.8, turn lights on and it will steadily drop 6.75... 6.74... 6.73 ect

This morning I loosened and retightened the fan belt, retightened the generator belt, removed regulator, sanded mounting surfaces again and put it back on, start the tractor with same results. Letting in run for a while it will get around 7 volts. Flip the lights on and it goes down. Left lights on and running cleaning up in the shop and was down to 6.2 in about 5 minutes. Straight grounding the field it will start climbing well past 8 if I'd let it

Also just tried grounding field out with the lights on and voltage does NOT climb. That to me says yes the generator is charging but not putting out enough amps

The voltage can be adjusted on a regulator. It is not simple, but better than buying a new VR with the same issue. Purchase a 1960 or 19505 Motors Manual (brand name) or a electrical systems manual/text from that era. and learn how to do it. Jim
