Was at a auction and I thought I was watching a f-20 being sold a man behind me was talking and said there were regular's / f-20's / plain 20's if what is the history or difference?

The line started out as a regular and was IH's first farmall. They later made some improvements and labeled them as F20's to go along with the F30. I never heard of a plain 20. They were still selling 10-20's at the time. Never was a W20.

I think the gas tank decal on the very first f20's were labeled
FARMALL 20. Later they had two decals on the fuel tank. One was
FARMALL and then the small decal with the model number F-20. They
are the same tractor.

Thank you! We bought the tractor and it's all original and been housed and you can faintly see on the tank Farmall and below 20

one big difference is in the steering box. The Regular has an open gear, and the F-20 had a closed steering box.

The first ones were simply called the Farmall. Later when the F series was introduced the F20, and F30 , and later F12 were easy enough to differentiate but the parts men and everyone else needed a way to distinguish the Farmall from the series of Farmalls. They started calling the Farmall a regular Farmall. IH never referred to them as regulars but the name stuck. Early advertising artist renditions of the F series used Farmall 20 and Farmall 30 decals on the tank. They were never used on the actual tractors as they were introduced with the 2 decal setup as the F20 and F30.

Please post a couple of pictures, especially the decals on the fuel tank. Also, I suggest that you leave it in its "Work Clothes" rather than painting it gray.

YES, that is how I understand it. The Regular was never called a Regular by IH. It was called a Farmall, because it was the first tractor designed and built to do everything on the farm. Hence the name "Farmall".

What we call the regular was simply the 'farmall' when it was sold since that is the trademarked name for the machine.

very early machines, 24 25 and 26 were basically their own respective machines each year due to so many changes and unique parts between them. Late 26 to 32 were essentially the same machine with only a few very minor changes along the way. in 29 oil filters were added.

When the F-30 came out in 31 it was first called the 'improved power farmall' and very soon dubbed the Farmall 30.

F-20 was introduced in 32 and about 2499 units were made with none produced in 33. The beginning of 34 they made a batch of F-20's with a TA serial number that were made with some leftover Regular parts. serials for those are 135000 to 135661.

differences between a regular and a 20 are some of these
-regular has open gear steering. early 20's used the same gearing but were covered and looked like a ducks bill, hence the 'duckbill' term. in mid 34 they went to the worm style gear
-regular had a sidedraft ensign carb where a 20 had a zenith K5 updraft carb with upright exhaust. regular exhausted downand to the side
-regular had a 3 speed tranny where a 20 was a 4 speed
-regular had a single chamber main fuel tank with a separate starter tank mounted behind. 20's had two filler neck on one tank combined
-regulars had a leaf spring style seat assembly, 20's used a c channel type with a verticle coil spring.
-regular has Dixie mag's (up to '26) and IHC E4A magnetos with manual trip with E500A automatic impulses on the very late ones. The E4A with auto impulse followed into early F-20 production when it was replaced with the F4A magneto
