Working on H

I have been greasing the front wheel bearings, but decided to pull wheels and check inner bearings today. The left inner bearing had completely come apart, I could not even find the cage. What is interesting is that I found an old cotter pin inside the housing. I was really surprised how they made that casting, it is a real bear to get all the old grease out because it widens way out, then gets narrower on the bearings. I bet there is an extra pint of grease in there that serves no purpose.

One of the brake seals is leaking a little, so I pulled that apart. I had replaced the old double seal with a new single seal. Do you know if I can drive a second seal in there, or should I just drive the existing seal in a little further, hoping to find virgin shaft. The shaft has about 1/8" of endplay, is that an issue, or should I look to tighten that up?

I checked the transmission and not a drop of water in it, lube looks and smells good.

Original seals were single, but with increadsed depth. newer thinner seals can be doubled up. A speedy sleeve may be in order. Jim

Do you have a part number for speedy sleeve?

That really sounds better than doubling seals.

Unfortunately no. Measure the seal surface (or look it up from the seal part number) and go from there. Motion Industries, or Kamman Bearing. Jim

The speedi sleeve has a lip or ring on the outer edge of it that is used to tap against to drive it on. Where that lip meets the flat surface of the sleeve it is "scored" for lack of a better term, and you take a pair of pliers and peel off that lip so all you are left with is the new sealing surface on the shaft. Depending on how good your local parts store is, that's where I get my speedi sleeves from. Got a 4 1/2" speedi sleeve for a crank one time, that was a pricey unit at about $85.

I have found that a new, thinner oil seal will usually locate far enough out on the shaft to be on an unworn area. When I was in doubt, I installed 2 seals, with grease in between.

Should be able to mount seal so that it contacts a good area of the brake drum hub. If not lots of brake drums can be bought less than a speedy sleeve, unless you are in a farmall depressed area.
