Re: M steering gear? add grease or 90 oil?

I found JD grease box grease. Now what? How much do I put in? Do I fill up gear box to the top with grease to cover steering worm gear? Should I scape out all old grease in gear box as some is really black looking?

Definately take that 40 yr old grease out of there, wouldnt hurt to remove that flat gear, and clean out under that also!

If it has not been done I THINK you can turn the big gear over and it will be snugger since you have a fresh side of teeth engaged.

I whipped up my own 50-50 blend of red {RED!} wheel bearing grease and 90 wt. gear oil in a coffee can with my drill and p-o-u-r-e-d it in. Works perfect, stays in place. cheap.

Don't turn the gear over it has tapered splines that only works correct on shaft one way. M didn't come with a full circle gear, but if replaced with one in the past it can be repositioned so unused teeth or teeth with the least wear can be used.
