Tractor rim and tire size

My Tractor is a 1950 Farmall H that my father purchased new. It has rear 10 inch rims on it but the calcium chloride has destroyed them with rust. I have a very nice set of rear 9 inch rims off an earlier H and would like to use them. I prefer to use 12.4-38 tires.

My question is this: Will 12.4-38 tires work ok on a 9 inch rim? Thanks for your time and reply.

You can mount them, and it'll work, but the tire will not have the correct footprint.

If 12.4 width will not have the correct footprint on a 9 inch rim, then what width or size of 38 inch tire would be needed to have the correct footprint on a 9 inch wide 38 inch rim? Thanks for your assistance and reply.

Mite not be the industry perfect match but plenty of 12.4 where put on 9 inch rims since the tractors were built. One more time is no big deal. Unless you want things perfect use the good rims. One was used on the farm for almost 30 years with 12.4 on 9 inch rims. First new set put on tractor in the fifties around the time that size started being used. Tractor was a 41 model.

9.5-38, 11.2-38 is probably ok. In those days IH allowed a tire with 1 inch more tread width. 11.2 was called 10 inch, 9.5 was called 9 inch.
