IH 340 Hydraulic Trouble

Hi guys. I've browsed the forum and tried a few suggestions but am still having trouble. I have a 340 utility with the hydraulic pump that runs off the timing gear. I've lost all hydraulics. No loader lift, bucket tilt and fast hitch lift. I've opened where the hydraulic lines mount to the pump, on an incline. I had fluid coming out the lower line. I started to open the cover for the hydraulic filter and had fluid coming out there. I changed the fluid 8 months ago and the hydraulics worked fine until 4 months or so ago. The tractor doesn't get much use. Before things quit completely, the loader intermittently worked a few times. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

is it low on fluild...is the motor overfull on oil.if so the pump is leaking into motor...check hydralic filter and clean it........good
luck......dewy

Thanks dewy. Motor oil is good. Fluid for hydraulic is correct. I will pull the filter and clean it.

The 340 has a replaceable paper filter in it. It could be either a single oval shaped filter
or a pair of doughnut shaped filters. Depends on when it was built or if it was updated.
They rarely get replaced like they should. They can look clean but still not pass fluid.
Replace them.

Check for air leaks in hydraulic lines , I have seen them
loose prime when sitting and the pump will have trouble
getting rid of the air to be able to pump oil, O-rings,
hole in line or seals , or filter . I have had to rev a
few to wot to get them to pump oil after they lost prime

Thanks for all of the input guys. After pulling the hydraulic pump, the shaft of the gear that drives the pump off the camshaft gear is broken. It also chewed up the teeth some on the camshaft gear. How critical is this? A few teeth are worse than others, but none are completely sheared off. Will I be ok to just install a new pump?

Hi, I bought a 340 a few years ago that did this same thing. The pump gear eventually sheared of and destroyed the main internal gear. This required a complete engine removal to fix.
My suggestion is to put a new gear on the pump, and see if it fixes things for you. This was weak link on the 340, because of the Mickey Mouse way the gear was secured on the shaft. I popped a small spot weld on the new one to keep it tight.
Hope that helps.

Do you know if the gear on the cam is pressed on? That is chewed up so I plan to pull the loader, front end and parts to get at the gears. Hopefully the main gear is fine. Thanks.
