stay rod ball wide front

how much clearence should there be on the ball on the end of the stay rod to the cover plate? I replaced ceover plate and the cover onn the top of it and I know there are shims to adjust can't seem to find out how free it should be. Axle moves up and down with no shims under plate.

Look for flat spots on your ball. It has either that or the casting the ball fits into is wore out. If the axle is moving on the pivot pin so it can move up and down then the axle needs attention or the pin.
As for the tightness of the ball it should be tight with clearance to move freely. We drilled that top casting below the main casting bolted to the frame for a grease fitting.

thanks for the info. wide front came off of a 560 that had back saddle from 400 or M and bottom cup was damaged. By axle moving up and down I was talking about with wheels off the ground. It is tight on the pin as I put in new bushings (2 of them at $108) looks like it could use a grease zerk.
