Farmall M weak starter?

Have a 49 m that sat for 15 years, got running 3 years ago, then sat again since then. starter is not engaging flywheel. When i pull the starter off it spins good and looks like it would work, but when i put it on tractor it just hums. I am putting the voltage right to the starter the same way when I have it on the tractor as off so feel like I'm getting good juice. Tractor turns over by hand so not stuck. Thanks I'm advance for any ideas u have!

You may have to replace the bendix on your starter. After a long while they do wear out I had the same thing on my Cub and 9N Ford..

Why not take the starter to a shop and have it refreshed new brushes clean commutators bearing and bushing then if you have good connections and battery it will start like new again. Just finished one same way now it startes just like new again.

Starter drive is bad. Best thing is to have it starter) professionally rebuilt. Expencive? Yes,but well worth it to have a tractor that start

The starter motor is a high amp high torque type. If it reacted to being tested by spinning (on the floor), it is not good. A starter motor, tested on the floor with a good battery will jerk its self harshly and roll away from the jumper cable. If tested in a big vice it will spin radically and snap the drive out to its limits. Humming is a sure sign that it needs to be rebuilt. There is a new style drive pinion that is much better than the old big spring type. be sure to use that new style. Jim

I would agree, probably brushes hanging up, I hold onto them when testing so they do not jump across the room.

A good local rebuild is less than a hundred dollars here and comes with a warranty.

They are cleaned, repaired, tested and painted.

If he lives in a rural area like I do. A starter repair shop would be an overnight trip. There are none here.

If shipped, starters fit in a USPS one rate box! Learning to repair a starter is about the most simple thing a self reliant person can start out on. Old Chilten or Motors manuals detail the process. As does a tractor specific manual. Just Do it as they say. Jim
