Farmall steering line tubing specs?

Good evening;
Does anyone have any idea of the specs for the tubing itself for the steering lines for my Farmall 706? Specs such as ID, OD, material?
The leak is right at the flare joint, and it occurs to me that I can cut a few inches off, make an extension, and fix the problem much more inexpensively than by getting a new part for $90. It looks larger than an automotive brake line.

Not to discourage you from attempting a do-it-yourself repair, but when it's all said and done, I think you would be better off to spend the $90 and be done with it.
 
It's steel hydraulic tubing, perhaps 7/16".


If you want to get out of buying and installing a whole new line, you MAY be able to replace the last 6"-12" with a section of hydraulic hose with a female flare fitting at one end and a special (made for hydraulic use) compression fitting at the other.

Or, a good hydraulic shop could probably fix you up with a section of steel line that would connect to cut-back end of the old line and to the male flare.

They have a special end at the front casting where the steering piston is. You can splice it if you want just a 3/8 line Od with a flare. It would be easier to just cut the flare off and then reflare it. You will need a flaring tool for the line. Don't forget to get the nut on first. There is enough line to just pull that much with a little work. No parts needed.

Turned out that there was a crack in the tubing near the flare, about 1/2 of the way around the tube. I suppose you've all seen that before maybe, but as I said, I'm new.
I feel a bit foolish for not thinking in the beginning of just trimming under 1/2" of tubing and reflaring the thing. I made some other beginner booboos as well, but worked through them. I cut and reflared, there was enough slack to put it all together, and for now that leak is fixed. We'll see for how long.

Now it's on to the next problem, but that's a new thread.
