Worked on the h's steering last year, the big gear in the top of the pedestal was a little loose, I think it is tapered fit, I tighting it and got it tighter, only now it steers a little harder, is the gear wearing on the bottom side of the houseing, can you maybe machine a 1/8 inch of the bottom of the gear to help free it up, thanks, rod

That might be an idea... I dunno. I tried lots of hill-billy remedies, finally bought a new worm gear / shaft from this site, worked great.

Due to spline fit, shaft length a little off or bolster a little off some need trimmed on the bottom if gear contacts the housing before getting tight on splines. May want to make sure someone didn't add a extra spacer on shaft or above trust bearing at bottom before removing material. Also a change in some parts, what year is the H?

Take off just enough that when gear is tight on splines you have just a little vertical up and down clearance in shaft. Just so the gear doesn't take all end play out of shaft before tightening on splines. Run into a very few like that but never needed to remove .125 from one. Maybe .080 from the worst.
