Welding A-V cultivator bar

My client dropped off a snapped cultivator bar for repair. Since I've welded everything else on the farm, I'm asking if anyone has dealt with such a fracture. Farmer Brown must have been flying when he hit a rock.

It looks like it's granular/cast, but I doubt it.

Any advice? replace?

Take a file to it if it files easily, grind on it with a bench grinder. Red weak sparks it will be cast iron. Nice readymade yellow sparks low to medium steel. Bright multy fracturing fizzy sparks, will be high carbon steel. All are weldable. How thick is it, and what does it carry? Don't mess with it if human risk is involved with its failure. Jim

Do those tests, I think it will be medium carbon steel. If so grind a groove in both pieces and weld it with multiple passes 7018. Jim

Where that is broke theres too much tension at that place and there isnt enough room to make a good weld and clear the bracket. It would need to be ground down a bunch at least 1 inch all around then welded. time and risk would be cheaper to get a new piece and make the bend that piece when new was red hot then bent with great force.

Will check by spark. It's about 1.5 dia., surely not cast, just stressed so badly it sheared/fractured in one whack.

That is spring cast and will almost always rebreak ,if welded but it is worth trying so grind to a point and weld it solid and then bury in sand , sand will hold heat in and it will take several hours to cool .

To Gene Bender:

Bar is 1.38" dia, 22-23" long with two legs 7" long. Cotter pin holes on legs. Bent like this: [ , (imagine it in italics).

Have decided to send it out to a welder, as my right arm is in a sling for rotator cuff tear.... hence, no stripped down photo.

Might want a spare, as Farmer Brown is hard on his equipment, and tries to break rock. Let me know if you have this bar?
