Tricks of the trade. Mounting carbs.

I really seem to struggle with getting the carb mounted correctly on
my farmall 300. Any tricks guys? How to you get the screw on the
governor tube on the engine side tightened properly? Also what
about the nut on the manifold engine side too. I can't really get a
wrench in there. Is the stud in the manifold stock? Or
Do some use bolts there?

Thanks, Ryan

Install the governor tube to the carburetor BEFORE mounting the carb to the manifold. A Snap-On stubby combination wrench will access that nut on the backside, but you still need to hold your tongue just right and be creative.

A very short 12 point box end wrench. You will be using both sides, box & open for about a 1/16 of a turn. Not only that, but the stud is fine thread. Get a tall bucket, get comfortable & get after it. Only trick I know of to run it up as far as possible with your fingers, tighten the outside nut to just barely snug. Then get comfortable.
Hooking the gov shaft up, isn't easy. It just takes patience. Have the two screws handy, line up the actuator shaft with the key way in the carb, once lined up, have your wife hold the carb perfectly still as you start the two screws, once hand tight request your dearly beloved hand you back the carb without moving it a millimeter. You will then realize you forgot to mount the new gasket first & get to do it all over again. About the fourth or fifth try you will then see how easy it could have been the first time. DO NOT THROW the carb across the shop in frustration.......that gets expensive......

Some of the SH, 300 and 350 carbs need some force moving tube or getting carb into position to get on studs even after loosening the screws at the front of throttle tube. On one I checked some 3/8 auto header bolts with a shoulder and 7/16 wrench size I had around. found 2 the correct length. Removed the manifold studs, put a small dab of never cease on bolts and don't tighten enough to strip threads that is plenty tight on a carb flange. Put a little grease on gasket to hold and just slide carb onto the throttle shaft keeping gasket just below manifold when sliding on. Hardest part of installing like this is getting the first bolt started and holding carb with other hand. Not to hard with practice. After checking bolts a couple of times after installing they haven't loosened since.

(quoted from post at 20:23:46 04/28/16) Get a set of crows foot wrenches.

I had set until someone else has a set. I have 2 crows foots and they are both 3/4. Off to get a small set for my carb. I did not know I needed to have my tongue out for removal too....need to remember next time.
