Farmall M power steering

Working on a Farmall M , put a Char Lynn orbit motor on it, cut the steering shaft to fit and added the wobbler to it. Next step went to mount the independent pump onto the governor cover , the problem is that the fan is going to be too close and hit the pump pulley and belt. This is the same type of pump and bracket that Steiner and Bates sale. What is the remedy for this?

I know the fan shroud has to be cut to make it work. I don't remember having a problem with the pulley hitting the fan.

It's darn close. Mine has just a little of the shroud bent back and doesn't miss that fan by more than 1/4 inch I believe. There is wiggle room in that bracket. When I have had mine loose I know I have had to push it towards the rear of the tractor to make everything happy. I suppose you could add a washer between the pump and governor bracket to shim it backwards.

Fan spacers were included in that type pump drive. Instead of the original drive studs for the coolant shaft bolts with sleeves were used so the springs ended up with about the same space as before. In other words the fan was moved forward about the same distance as the hex part of the drive studs. Have seen fan blades bent forward but puts a good bit of angle to them and takes a chance on cracking a years old fan.
Pretty sure I remember using old M push rods cut for use as bolt sleeves because if you get the regular charr lynn spacers the sleeves are sometimes worn through on the thrust side. Maybe dilled the ID just a bit so the 5/16 bolt would slide in.

When I put power steering on my 1940 M, 2 of the fan blades cleared the belt just fine, and 2 blades did not. I assumed the 2 blades that already cleared were bent, and had been that way for many, many years, so I bent the remaining 2 blades. All is well.

I second your motion. I bent the fan blades with palm of my hand This worked fine as fan blades are not balanced. Forget spacers,

Your way better off running power steering from the belly pump with a priority valve, in my opinion. Yea, youd lose it when you hit the clutch in but it would be less involved.

My M has this setup also. I put a rebuilt water pump on and the fan hit the PS pump pulley. I soon realized the old water pump had 2 shims behind the fan blade I needed to use. If I remember right they were each aprx. 1/4" thick. My fan shroud had also been cut down in that area. The real mystery to me is how to reinstall the hood without beating a dent in it to clear that Char Lynn orbit motor. Some say it can be done but I can't figure out how!
