The original subject was "Re: IH 460 stuck between gears".

Sorry to dredge up an old thread but I always search before asking. My 460 is stuck between two gears but my problem is a bit different. When I pulled the shifter the three slots are aligned and all shift forward and backward, snapping into place. TA has never worked since I had it. So, because the three shift slots align as intended do you suspect a shift fork is broken? I didn't have to pry or force any fork into position. All shifted fine, I moved a round bale into the pen, drove it out and parked it like normal. Upon restarting a week later it was stuck.

It can happen and the only way to be sure is to pull the top off (IIRC) there is no visual access. Other things are possible such as frozen brakes,or a broken part stuck between the gears. Jim

Are you sure you have all 3 in neutral??
If all 3 are in gear rather than neutral will have same symptoms. Look for the easy solution first

It would be very odd for the tractor to spontaneously/magically get stuck in two gears just sitting there.

Did you shift it when you went to move it?

Before you go crazy pulling the top cover off the transmission, take the brake covers loose and see if it frees up. Certainly taking the brake covers loose is easier than lifting the top cover.

highwayman,

When I pulled the shifter all three were in the center notch. I did move each forwards and backwards and they snapped into place each time. When reassembling I left them all three in the middle when I put the shifter back in and same issue.

Tractor starts with the clutch in but dies as soon as you try to let it out.

I will check the brakes but seems as odd as the trans being locked that the brakes would lock just sitting one week. One brake doesn't work at all. On the right one the threaded adjusting stud that goes through the pedal is broken off and has been since I bought it.

The only thing I use this for is moving one round bale every 10 days or so for my wife's horses. I put a fork on the loader and that's all it does. I'm sure it had a hard life before me but since I had it all I have done is putted from the hay shed to the horse pen.

Another thing that I thought of just now while typing is the previous time or time before that I was moving a bale it didn't want to shift into reverse. I did get a bit rough with the shifter because it was being balky and it did go into reverse. I had since driven it a time or two, both forwards and backwards so I never gave it another thought until now. I may have damaged or cracked a shift fork. Even though they are lined up on top it might be broken below.

Did you try letting the clutch out with shift lever in neutral? If it moves, then it's possibly a broken fork. If the engine dies, I would say there is something stuck in the constant mesh gears in the transmission(good probability a ball from one of the trans. bearings).
