Farmall M thermostat

Ordered new thermostat for our M. They tell us this is supposed to work?
It just sits in the housing loose, nothing to hold it. It is quite a bit smaller then the original.
I keep telling them it's the wrong one, they say it will work. I sure don't know how. Someone educate me please? Thermostat came from YT parts. Incidentally, when you look up the thermostat for an M, it shows a picture of the original one. Not the too small new one.

Don't use that new thermostat. The one you need is available at IH and has a long tube like old one. That is for a reason to provide a internal bypass system until thermostat opens. IH had a mistake in their parts books many years ago and supplied a thermostat like that new one you have there but quickly recalled them for that application. That being said, your housing is probably rusted and eroded enough that even with the correct thermostat your engine will not warm up without a load due to coolant being able to go on around the tube and to radiator. Others will argue of course but a garden hose stuck in the assembled housing will prove to you weather or not the thermostat is blocking flow, except for a small amount, as it should until it starts to open.

Hey Dutch, not to knock the sponsor here but Steiner has a thermostat for the M that's 2.6" long and flange 2.510" dial.
My Farmall 450 came from near Abilene...close to you?
Good luck

Ok Thanks. Previous parts ordered for it came from them, YT is a little cheaper. Guess you get what you pay for. I'm about 3 hrs west of Abilene.

I recommend putting a stainless steel ""gasket"" (made to match a housing gasket except for the bypass hole) and drilling a 5/16 hole in the stainless at the bypass opening. @ gaskets and the new restrictor, and it will warm up. Jim

Biggest problem would be is if they charged you for the original style tstat, like the one they show. That one there is what, 8 or 9 bucks at most any parts house.

Thanks guys. Thermostat is on it's way back. Got the right one coming.
Andrew had also ordered a set of main bearings. Came in Thursday. One of the halves was scratched up. Got a new one of them coming too.
