300 utility PTO lever

whats the best way to tighten up a key way on a PTO lever on an IH 300 Utility, mine is sloppy,I was thinking a machinist or red loctite,it acts like theres not even a key in there...

If you remove the lever you may find one or the other side of the key way has been opened up some with abuse. A little bit of play in that lever can make a lot of difference and it sounds like you have a lot. On mine what I did was find a key that fit in the enlarged slot tightly. Then I had the machine shop take the other end of the key down to the correct size so I had one key that was stepped down in size...if that makes sense. It was a cheap fix and much to my surprise it worked and still works, must be four years now.

I'm gonna try to upload some pics with my phone, the key way is egged out bad and I even tried a bigger key with no luck

Heres some pics..

Most machine shops can broach a new oversize keway in the handle, and enlarge the woodruff pocket for the next oversize. Drilling a 3/16 hole through both and driving in a hardened pin is also fine. Jim

I was hoping you would chime in Janicholson, I never thought of a roll pin, I just got a set of viking/norseman drill bits. But I got a very good machine shop down the road...
Thanks all

We used to handle stuff like that at the Rendering plant with a step key and one of the various Loctite products available, usually by dealing with the part we had out at the machine shop and the part still on the system with the Loctite. Got another 2 years out of an Anco cooker shaft that really needed changing although by the end I think my Tech had about 1/2 the shaft keys bronzed in place.
