H starter binds

I got a new starter for my H. First install the starter would not stop turning. could hear it rattle as I drove. Backed it off and it seemed to disengage. Ran it a few more times and then suddenly it would not engage to start. The positive lead was getting hot. Took starter to get checked and it was fine (so he says) I heard him test it, seemed to work. I put it back on and shimmed it with washers. Starter engaged again but seems to not let go of fly wheel. Tractor runs while I have the starter turning and dies as I release the starter switch, which is getting hot in the mean time. If I hold in the starter switch the tractor keeps running. As I release the switch the rpms drop, tractor dies and I can hear the starter turning with the engine. Switch is getting hot. More shims? seems like I need to back off the starter more but I do not like the pressure put on the start casing by just the two bolts...

any thoughts?

THe hot wire from the starter switch to the ignition is on the wrong terminal on the starter switch. It must be on the side hooked to the battery, not the side going to the starter motor. Jim

Jim is correct. I did the same thing once, before this forum was here -- I guessed right.
