Am I Out Of Line!?!

I put that new Farmall H on Craigslist the other day for $1500 just to see what would happen. Not totally sure i want to sell it, but, I don't have a need for the lower 1st/reverse, and I already have a nice running and driving H, and mine has a Gas engine in it too!

I was thinking that I might swap my wide front and tires over to this new H and keep it, but, I thought why go through all the work just to have lower 1st and reverse gears? I can tell it's engine just isn't quite as potent as the gasser too. Less compression.

Anyways, I said in the ad that the tractor starts and runs good, BUT, it struggles to accelerate without coughing/choking, but if you move the lever slowly, it will throttle up just fine! (Carb just needs cleaning and a rebuild I suppose) Said that it is on okay 14.9 x 38s, with SOME checking and cracking in the tread, good front tires. Narrow front, REALLY nice hood/fuel tank, but the grill is pretty rough. And then at the end of the ad I said that it was an X6 with the lower 1st and Reverse gears, and "I personally think this makes the the tractor a little more valuable, just because it is rarer than the average H". $1500

Okay, I see nice, stock H's on CL all the time for $1600-2000, and thats too much, and most of the time they just sit on them!

I was thinking that an average H, in the condition mine is in, $1000-1200, X6, I am asking $1500.

I get an e-mail from this guy yesterday, and he is literally just chewing my a$$ out!!! Tells me that the coughing is because the engine is about to "fall apart at the seams", and that "the X6 designation doesn't mean sh_t to me!". And a few other just down right nasty things, insults towards my tractor for that matter! Finally he says "I guess I could give you $400 for it, e-mail me".

I wrote back and told him to put his $400 where the sun don't shine!

I thought I had a pretty reasonable ad up, maybe not?

I don't think you are out of line at all. Kinda like a guy emailed me about a tractor I had for sale. I needed a bunch of parts of his tractor same model. I had it at $4000. Once he decides he wants it he asks me what I want for it. I said $4000. He started saying all kinds nonsense because he wants the tractor but he doesn't have the money. Somebody is trying to guilt you into selling it cheap. don't listen to them.

"I needed a bunch of parts of his tractor same model"

Correction,

HE needed a bunch of parts off of MY tractor same model.

Bryce he wanted something for nothing. It's an age-old tactic to buy cheaper, let the seller know "what a piece of junk" they are selling. No response needed. You can be sure, as nasty as he was to you, he wanted your tractor pretty bad and he knew it was a decent price. He was probably hoping you would counter with a lower selling price. Ignore him, there are plenty of other buyers out there.

Whenever someone tells me they can buy a lot cheaper somewhere else. I just say " then why in H are you calling me? Go buy it there "

Very fair price.Try opening the load screw a turn to see if that helps the acceleration problem. The lower 1st/reverse gears would be REALLY handy That is about the only thing I dont like about mine. 1st and reverse are TOO FAST .There are plenty of other gears if I want to go fast.LOL I personally would consider switching things around just to get those low gears.Make yourself a REALLY GOOD/NICE tractor and reassemble and sell the the other one. Ask 1500 for it too. Never mind that A...hole.....There will always be guys out there who would beach if hung with a new fur lined and gold plated rope.Keep up the good work!

Bryce,

Not sure exactly what area of country your in. I am in Minnesota and here you can buy good running farmall h's for $750-1000 All day everyday. I would start around $1250 see where you end up. Good luck

No sense even responding, just good be someone fishing or a crackpot.

I think you are about right, maybe a little high, but not out of the ball park.

Why not fix the coughing so you do not have to talk about that?

I agree with eddie. $1,500 seems high. CL prices are high. $1,000 would be more reasonable. However, as my Dad always said. "You can't go up on the price of a horse!" Start at $1,200 and be willing to come down.

Even it there weren't other buyers, I wouldn't sell it to anyone that arrogant. I'd recommend just ignoring him -- believe me, he's used to it.

Bryce, just because you are a decent, hard working person trying to get ahead in this world, there is a whole lot of crackpots out there that live to harass good people. Don't give them the time of day. I know you live somewhere in northern Idaho and My brother lives in St. Marie, Idaho. I was wondering if you were close. Not a bad price for a running H. Good luck and keep doing what you have been doing.

You're not out of line. You can ALWAYS come down if you want to.

If anything the guy that replied was out of line! Any civilized person doesn't act like that.

You maybe should have replied "This is how people act wen cousins marry!" lol

I have a nice running H with new rears for sale at $1600, but I still have it. You are not out of line as we both could come down.

I am up in Sagle ID, go down to St. Maries once in awhile. About 3 hours for me. Fastest is to go South, over the 4th July, and then drop down through Rose Lake. Tell him to come get it! ;)

Well, I want the wide front, and I am pretty sure the Gasser is in better shape (the tractor I already had). Cosmetically the newer one is a little nicer, but not much...

Kind of thinking about breaking both tractors at the engine / bell housing, and taking the backhoe, and swapping the entire engine and front ends! :p

Then I would put the nicer sheet metal on the gasser front end, coupled to the rear end of the X6 tractor. I found an H with a Charlynn power steering system, AND a Mag Drive live hydraulic pump for $300 I hope. Put all those goodies on what would then be my good H, and I would have one heck of a nice machine! Still thinking about it for sure..... :)

Some folks are jerks, he might want to get you to believe your tractor was a piece of junk so he could buy it cheap and stick it on Craig's list to make some money. If you put something up for sale in a public forum be prepared to have to deal with the public, this means putting up with the jerks and schemers too. If he's that aggressive and gets upset that quickly it's probably not someone you want to deal with, this is also the kind of person who believes that even though he told you your tractor was a piece of junk and he beat you up on price because of that if he decides to keep it and if anything goes wrong in the next 15 years he'll harass you about it and expect you to fix it or give him money back. Around here we call that kind of person a nnalert.

You got a plan!! Go for it!Or...keep the 'leftovers',find a junk 300 and build yourself one of these rare 'elusive' SuperHTAs.

I advertise on Craigslist all the time.
One rule applies: my ad always states [b:49ec31fab8]"please reply via Craigslist with your phone number and I will call you. All other replies get deleted". [/b:49ec31fab8]Perhaps I've lost a sale or two over the years, but this seems to remove all the lowballers, crackpots, wannabes etc. And with the skill demonstrated by today's computer hackers, I don't like opening just anyone's email.

Just my 2 cents.

Don't sweat it. You were more than forthcoming in your ad. There are scads of folks out there that will try to beat anything down, No matter what.
As it stands right now, they are both your machines, Build the one you want, If you want.

Its your tractor. So sell it for whatever the hell you want. That's what I say. I see overpriced tractors all the time around here.
With that said, I paid $1000 for my running driving 1950 low gear X1A H that just needed valves adjusted with the gas motor (not distillate).
My tires were worn down firestone F&R's. For me I was happy with all that as I was pulling with it.
I've seen X1A H's, X1G H's and even X1F. I've never seen an X6 yet.
Definitely ignore those emails.
I have an email address specifically for craigslist ads. I only use it for that and nothing else. That way my business email doesn't get all spammed out.

You got ONE bad response. I don't understand why people let that rattle them so badly... Just don't.

Keep in mind that less is more. People think if you are willing to divulge that much, there must be way more wrong with it than that.

Frankly with a little fiddling with the carburetor, ignition and timing you could get that sputter/cough out of it and then you wouldn't have to put that in your ad!

I always thank the real jerks profusely and then block their email and phone number. Life is too short to talk to the same ones more than once.

Bryce is not yet 20. At that age we do get rattled. I left my Email open for the first month I was on YT. I suggested that a SH
Stage 2 with good tires was worth 1900. Someone emailed me with radical information about my parents and lively hood. I almost
stopped participating, I am glad I didn't. Jim

YA! BTDT!

I am not at all rattled over it, just mostly found it quite comical!? I was if anything insulted that he thought that MAYBE I would be stupid enough to listen to his BS! :p

There are a lot of Negative Nancy's out there, I do my best to find a hint of comedy in their utter stupidity. ;)

When I ad on craiglist, I only accept phone calls. You get all kinds of trash if you take emails and texts. You just have to ignore the trash if you choose to use the email and texts.
