Farmall 400 PTO Bands

I'm in the process of getting the PTO bands relined for my 400. The place I took them to said that the factory specs call for an 1/8 thick lining but the thinnest they can do is 3/16". Will this extra 1/16" cause any problems? It seems to me that there is plenty of room for adjustment to compensate for that but I'm not sure. Does anybody see any problems with an added 1/16" of wear surface?

In my opinion there will be about 1/2" difference in length with that change in thickness. The adjustment is intended to be from new smaller, not from new bigger. I do not think it has a chance. I would ask them to get the correct thickness of material even if it requires a wait. Jim

It will make the total inside diameter about 1/8 inch smaller inside the band. I don't remember how much diameter clearance there is between the band and drum(been a while since I worked on one).

If you have them re-lined check the clearance by just putting bands over drums by themselves. If it looks okay, assemble the pto (with adjusting screws backed out) and place it on tractor.

Without starting the tractor, move the engaging lever engaging/disengaging a few times. Start turning the adjusting screws in a turn at a time and with the pto lever in the midway position insert a punch in the hole in the pto shaft and partially rotate it and feel for drag from the bands.

Then back off adjusting screws until there is no drag at midway point on lever. Then put lever in he "off" position, you should not be able to turn the shaft with punch(which means the brake is engaged). This will give you a starting point where you can start the tractor with a reasonable amount of safety where the pto should not be locked up between brake and engine drive.

Now you can start it and adjust brake band just tight enough where the pto stops with engine running and you can put a load on it and adjust the other band so pto doesn't slip.

Hope this helps.
