Well,I finally got to rebuild the governor on the Super M today. I found out some interesting things along the way. I was getting some interest in what was wrong,so here is what I found.
Taking the governor apart, everything internally looked brand new.All of the bearings and bushings were tight and looked only slightly used.Pins in gov weights were also tight and little to NO wear in them.Either this gov was rebuilt sometime before I bought it,OR I own a LOW hour tractor, don't know???(original gov, date codes match engine.) Some VERY slight wear in throttle shaft that passes into gov housing.I built it up and re sized. Cleaned gov housing,re painted and totally re sealed.

Now ,What I DID see was a TON of crap lodged in the tube between the gov housing and the carb. I scrubbed that stuff out of the tube and lubed the bushing at the gov end. (Pretend Farmer had mentioned he had a similar issue with his.) Adjusted gov and NOW it works AWESOME! ;)

to see if the tractor is low houred look at the clutch pedal. is it worn a lot from foot contact? does it have a lot of play side to side?

Good to see you got it running Mike. That throttle tube assembly looks like it has a Thompson governor kit in it. Is it a two weight setup, or is it a four weight ? Bob

I was fortunate enough to run into the same situation with my '47 M. The motor was rebuilt at some point in it's life and it has the 4" overbore kit (which was junk from being stuck for X amount of years, and me having to beat the pistons out of it). I just tore into the governor this week, and found that the bearings/weights/pins/bushings were nice and tight. I haven't taken the top section off (throttle shaft, etc.), but I will do that this week to look at those linkages. I've already installed a new seal in the rear of the case where the governor arm goes into the back of it.

Hopefully mine will turn out just as easy as yours - because the rest of the engine has seen better days!

No Bob,It is just the factory IH 2 weight governor. I notice them Thompson and M&W ones are getting rather "pricey" these days!!!

Clutch pedal tread looks in VERY good condition. There IS some "slop" in the pedal to the clutch shaft. It needs the bushing treatment.

It IS off the subject, but I wished it had the hour meter on it. I have always been curious of how many hours its had on the tractor. I know it wore cultivators once back in the day. (Had one of the mounting brackets still on it when I got it,plus you can see where was bolted to frame rails.) Engine rebuilt before I got it,but have ZERO idea about the trans/rear axle bearings and gears????

I have looked in my governor housing and have noticed wear in the holes where the springs hook in each end. How much is too much? I don't see any wear in yours. What is the best way to repair those worn holes?

Can you post some pics of the wear of those holes maybe?

Mine has steel bushings installed in those holes you speak of. I DID NOT do it. Either someone before me maybe??? It looks like a factory professional job whoever did it. I dont think it would be that big of a deal to add them to yours. They look like they could be made fairly easily out of some steel tubing maybe???
