Torque amplifier lube?

Is the torque amplifier on my IH 330 supposed to be in an oil bath? Mine is dry and has light rust all over it.

Can't see in my owner's manual where it says anything about lube for that compartment.

Also, is there only the one reservoir for the hydraulics, transmission and differential?

I used to have green machines, so I'm a little ignorant about IH.

Jim

The TA is internally lubed from the transmission. The exterior is dry and (as noted) has a dry disk clutch on its front. Trans fluid must be Hytran or equal to assure
operation of the sprag clutch in the TA rear section. Jim

Not sure I'm following all the terms. The part I'm thinking of has the planetary gears. Seems like they ought to be lubed. What am I missing?

Thanks.

(Will be off line for a few hours, so don't think I gave up:)

For the transmission and T/A check level plugs are on the left side of transmission housing and center housing toward the front. Half inch pipe plugs. It's all one compartment but it may take time for oil to level out to both plug holes. Oil splash and channel send oil to the T/A pocket. If the oil isn't low and tractor hasn't set long and rusted I did find another problem once. Oil pocket under the T/A unit had a piece busted out and no oil would pool there. On level oil should be up to the lower side of the T/A unit and not drain away.

The gears are in a sealed TA case that spins. they are lubed internally from the trans with a non-pressurized channel (as
mentioned) you will not see a level plug on the ta housing that spins, or on the TA compartment that is part of the frame.

I had the cover off the TA case a while back while rebuilding the steering box. I saw planetary gears that were not in a sealed case. I was staring at them. The teeth were only lubricated by air.

I don't use the TA much and it still works, which I understand is very uncommon.

I'll have to study my owner's manual more carefully and see if I can find more about this question. Wish the manual had a cross sectional view.

If you can see the internal gears, it has a broken case. you will be able to see a dry clutch, and a basic cylindrical
casting that rotates. Most images show the guts only. Jim

First picture oil level plugs. U will have foot rest in the area. Next is transmission oil pocket to feed T/A parts. Next is outlet for pocket. Input housing on T/A goes in the big hole. Next is planet gear pocket in the center housing. Upper right corner of picture is the bottom of housing. Next is picture of center housing from rear. Oil level is below the upper level in housing.
As you can see even before the T/A unit is bolted in some oil is trapped under the planet part. Oil from transmission passage lubes some of the T/A and some ends up in the pocket. Also some oil can get to the unit through a passage on left side of center housing. Oil sling from the PTO drive gears will put some oil in the passage, and in some use oil will flow the other direction toward PTO gears. You can see the lower PTO drive gear through the front oil level check plug. If rear check plug is a problem getting to, on level the front one will do if oil is given time to level out inside.
When working on a T/A unit there's always oil to catch from pocket under T/A unit that doesn't drain unless there's a problem.
