An International 254 diesel with FEL followed me home this weekend.
Unfortunately, once I got it here I realized there were some serious issues with the steering system. The top of the steering shaft is broken off and the power steering pump (hand pump?) that is mounted on the base of the steering shaft is leaking hydraulic fluid like crazy.
I think I can get the eyelet brazed back on top of the steering shaft, but I have no idea whether I'll be able to get the pump rebuilt. The FEL and 3 point hydraulics aren't working, but I'm assuming that's because the leaking power steering is robbing any hydro pressure.
Is there any harm in bypassing the power steering (just connecting the two lines that come into the steering box directly together with a short linker) at least until I can potentially find a replacement or rebuild kit? I believe the model was made both with and without PS, but I can't tell from diagrams whether the ratios/etc are different.
Thanks!
