Hey,Long time no post. :) Using the Super M the other day and noticed after warming up engine and awhile of use, the throttle lever is dead and can be pulled ALL the way open with NO throttle at all.Sending it fore ward and pulling back on the throttle lever quickly regains throttle,so it looks like it's time to do some maintenance! I have not been able to investigate or done anything yet.(could be broken throttle shaft part???) It will be this weekend when I tear into it.I have also been reading my IH service manual on adjustments of the governor.(I think I get the idea?)Not having much luck on finding archive info for some reason??? But before I get "deep" into it this weekend, I had a few questions .

#1 Is there a good source for aftermarket gov parts,or am I heading to IH dealer? (Not readily seeing anyone in my Google searches) I am not even seeing a gasket set,but I am not above making those.

#2 I have read some post on the gov weights being worn out where they pivot on the pins.(seen where some are drilling and re bushing these holes.) Any good folks/companies rebuilding out there where I could send mine to be reworked?(PLEASE, DO NOT tell me Denney's Carb Shop! lol)

#3 Any other tips/tricks on these governors that I need to know about that are not mentioned in the manuals? Looking at the schematics,it is not looking TOO overly complicated, but I just dont want to get this apart and not be able to locate needed parts and pieces . About all I have been able to find so far is throttle shaft to carb parts.

Thanks in advance for all help and input. ;)

If they get oil they last a long time, but if it is truly worn out, in my opinion it would be worth it to get the M @ W kind, with the better load response, i bought a used M @ W,love how snappy it is. Your sounds like something unhooked

I see there is a governor rebuild kit on Ebay. Todd

There's not much to it. The ball bearing that the weights push on will get worn and sloppy and of course the weight pin holes and pins. I have successfully drilled the holes oversize. I forget what I used for pins. A few thousandths will go a long way.

mike, I think you'll be able to see what the trouble is after you get the side plate and breather cover taken off. You can run the tractor with the covers open, just be careful. It could be the vertical linkage or throttle tube linkage is binding, or as FastFarmall said, something might be loose. Let us know what you find. If you need parts and cant find them locally, I've got everything you need. Bob

If your governor is worn out and you don't simply have a linkage issue here, you may be better off seeking out a scrap yard and buying a used(but fully functional) governor from a scrap M.
I worked with Stauffers salvage out in Kansas. I'm from Connecticut so they shipped everything. Prices were very reasonable.
You could and should keep your original.

But to pull the lever all the way back and get nothing tells me theres a linkage issue somewhere, not a worn out governor.

I am agreeing with something in the linkage somewhere, but wont be able to get into it until the weekend. But I also just want to be ready
for anything possibly else I might be finding on a 60+ year old well used governor while I have it apart. If I got things apart already and
they need replaced, might as well do it now.

It could be something as simple as a damaged throttle shaft between the carb and governor.
On my 1953 SM, I just replaced that with one from a scrap M in a salvage yard. What would happen is the governor seemed lazy to respond to load. I'd be at a tractor pull and have the throttle pulled wide open. As I went down the track and the transfer sled increased load, the rpms of the tractor would drop lower and lower. Eventually it would "kick in" and I could hear and feel the tractor start "trying".
What happened is so much gunk got inside the tube and bent the throttle shaft. The result is it was very stubborn to turn. The governor was only able to increase throttle when the rpms dropped down very low and the spring tension overcame the stubborn shaft.
When you look things over, check the carb to governor linkage. That throttle shaft should move very easily.
