Super M gas tank mount

I am removing my live hydraulics for pulling, as some already know.
Will the rear gas tank support off an M work in place of the live hydraulic reservoir?

Pretty sure it will. If not, pretty easy to 'manufacture' something. After all,it's a 'puller',so a few mods wont look out of
place.

Look where the rear tank mount was on top of the hydraulic reservoir on the SM. See another place with 2 holes for mounting forward of yours? Due to longer center housing on a SMTA that's were the rear tank mount falls when reservoir is on a SMTA. In reality you probably won't see one from a SMTA. Only saw two in my lifetime that didn't come with hydraulics and had a rear mount something like a M or SM but extended forward at top to reach tank mount.

SMTA is about 5" longer than M/SM. the difference is the clutch/TA houseing.Hood, steering shaft, clutch rod, throttle rod, Rear
steering steering /throttle support...... are longer/different

Memory could be off a little but remember center housing being 5 inches longer. You can measure center to center of bolt holes on top of reservoir to be real close or exact on how much longer. Then a SMTA upper bolster moves the radiator, vertical steering shaft ETC. 1.5 to 1.6 inches forward of where a SM ends up unless its a SMD. That's the reason for a longer hood on T/A tractors. All diesels from M through SMTA used the same placement upper bolster though all didn't have the squared corners like the t/a series and same hood lengths. Also same worm shaft length as t/a tractors. Tank mount at engine rear is the same placement on all the tractors, so when the transmission top ended up more to rear because on the longer center housing tank mount at a different place. Transmission top cover casting and reservoir size is the same for a stage 2 SM and a SMTA. Different sift forks on a SMTA though. Rear steering shaft, starter rod, choke rod and throttle rod is also longer on a T/A tractor. SMTA gas use a deeper radiator fan enclosure and a longer lower radiator cast pipe and longer rubber hose on top. Also longer radiator support rod and a different casting for rear worm shaft support. Some longer hydraulic hose than the stage 2 SM.

That's a lot of differences. So in 54, did they make two different tractors: SM and SMTA or did they just make the SMTA and if you didn't want a TA they didn't put one in but it was otherwise exactly like a SMTA?

Made some SM at farmall works early in 54, same tractor as a 53 stage 2 SM. SMTA had the same housings with or without T/A and with or without IPTO. SMTA was mostly made from stage 2 SM parts and 400 parts. Some parts only used on a SMTA was a gas hood, center steering shaft casting on gas ones, rear steering post, shift forks, IPTO operating handle, clutch pedal, choke, throttle and starter rod, shutter control and whatever hose or wiring needed for extra length. Some late SM had a grill like a SMTA without big holes punch and at least a few last ones probably had holes punched. W-6 used the same fan enclosure as the SMTA if I remember correct. Other than the parts I named or forgot the rest of parts on a SMTA are the same as a stage 2 SM or a 400 tractor

Holes like this? Very late 53 SM
