pulling sleeves from a 504

I've rebuilt many a M, SM, and 400,(dry sleeve) but never from what I hear is a wet sleeve engine. (C153) I've got it broken down (head off. pistons out, etc) and will be pulling the crank for a trip to the machine shop. The part I've never tackled is removing wet type sleeves. What am I up against? I don't have a puck yet, or do I need one for those?

504 has no sleeves. The C153 is a integral bore engine. You need to take the block to a machine shop and have it bored oversize and install new oversize pistons in it. That is if it hasn't already been bored oversize sometime in its life.

That's interesting. Looking at the top of the block, there is a lip around the top each cylinder just like a sleeve has.

Well if it's a 153, that's a H engine, that would have sleeves. If it's a 504, like it's been mentioned it's a sleveless engine!!!

After further review, the 504 is a 153, same as a H, the 544, is the 3 9/16, the sleeveless version !! Sorry about that .

Only thing I can think of it has been bored and sleeved back to standard.
Not certain that is possible on C153 but on some sleeveless engines it is.

Tractor Data calls it out as a C153 for gas and 188 for diesel.
CaseIH parts site shows sleeveless for gas version.
Guess you have some research to do to determine what is actually in your tractor. Would a H engine, sleeved, fit in a 504?
Just some thoughts

Well, it looks like a totally different engine than an H engine. Block says c153. I guess it's just the same cubic inch. This one is a first for me.

Note the ring at the top of the block

Looks like it has been bored oversize and repair sleeves installed to bring it back to standard. Either way a machine shop is going to have to take a look at it as those repair sleeves would have to be made to fit. Not something you can do in a home shop without boring equipment. And yes the 153 in the H and the C153 in the 504 are two totally different engines. The c153 is basically a super C engine without sleeves.

Farmall H is 152 cubic inches. Totally different engine than a 153.

Just rounded off up and down to ID different engines. Both have the same bore and stroke. At one time IH furnished pistons in .010 .020 .030 and .040 oversize for 153.

(quoted from post at 01:22:51 02/11/16) Looks like the fire ring on the head gasket to me.

I also suspect that is the imprint left from the fire ring on the head gasket. Polish up the surface of the block and see if those lines are still there. There is no doubt that the C153 is sleeveless, and I don't know if there is enough meat in the cylinder wall to bore it out and put thin wall sleeves in it.
