1st gear on 300U

I've removed the transmission cover of my 1955 300U to repair a pto issue and noticed that the teeth on 1st gear appeared worn. See attached picture. Is it worn to the point where I should consider replacing it now or is this typical wear for 60 year old tractor and would any replacement part be in similar condition?

Sorry here is the picture

Call or email Bates equipment in Burbon Indiana. if they give you a price you can live with, replace it. Look at the meshing gear as well. It is serviceable but marginal. Jim

The mating gear on the countershaft will look just like this one. This comes from grinding it into gear, instead of waiting to shift when the gears stop spinning.Under light use it could last, but the correct thing to is replace it and its mate.As long as it does not try to jump out of gear,it may never give you a problem, and also finding gears may be a problem, too,I would think.Mark

That's the 1st gear on the shaft but is actually 4th gear as far as the transmission is concerned. If none are missing chunks beyond what's already gone it will be ok. I would check carefully though for any cracked teeth on that gear and its mate on the countershaft.

How do the internal splines for "5th" look? That could be a determining factor.

Called 4th and 5th sliding gear. Has internal teeth on front also that locks to input shaft for 5th gear. If those teeth look okay and teeth in picture look good except for teeth edge worn it will be hard to find a used one better. From what I find maybe 1 in 3 to 1 in 5 that's good enough that I like to use.

I've seen worse. If close inspection doesn't find any mere severe problems than the picture shows, I'd leave it alone.

Keep in mind that used gears should be kept together as a pair. If you start swapping them around, they will work OK but can end up noisy (whining) because of differences in the wear patterns. You may trade "looks bad with the cover off" for "sounds bad when moving".
