424 Disk Brake Housings - standard maintenance?

Took off these housings on both sides of the IH 424 Diesel to see what was In there and how it worked. I wanted to ask you guys what you thought I should do to perform "regular maintenance" on them before reinstalling them back on the tractor. I did take a wire brush to the brake disc halves that are still on the tractor.

Here are some photos.......:.:::

I would replace the discs, and disassemble the expanders, clean, and inspect them. The expanders can have cracks where the balls go.Mark

Hi RTR, if the rivets are not exposed on the disks then just use a wire wheel on a drill to cleanup the disks. Also as another
post said, remove the expanders, take the springs off, cleanup the ramps and the rollers and lightly lube the ramps and rollers
with a powdered graphite lube. I have used a spray on graphite lube in a rattle can, spray some on ramp and rollers and wipe
excess off. Normally the metal contact surfaces that the disks brake against are shiny like a disk brake on a car. Yours appear
to be a rusty, they may shine up with use but the brakes may grab and lock until the rust gets worn off, If the brakes lock then
just reverse the tractor and they should unlock.
Re diff lock actuator shaft, lube it so works properly.
If you do replace the disks, the new disks may ride on the wear ridges on the drums and expanders and the brakes will not work.
Solution is to remove a little material on the outside of the friction pads so that it fits inside the old wear rings.

Good luck

Is there a trick to taking them apart? I don't want to mess something up or not be able to get it all back together.

Also, which surface needs to be shiny that the disks ride on? The surface on the tractor, or is it in the housing?

One more question, does anyone know where I could buy new rubber boots since these are toast?

Just looking for some help with the last post above. I just shined up this surface on the tractor. Does it need to be shined up? If so, do I need to grease it, paint it, or oil it?

You may have already done so but I am a newbie but have seen some videos along this line, some on external_links video site and also on
canadianredneck you tube channels. They may help with general information. Good luck.
