Not smart enough to buy running tractors.

Took a chance on a neat old tractor. Seems I never buy a running machine but I enjoy working on them. Not an elaborate find as came from CL.
Late 55 400 diesel. Power steering. Really nice matching good years. Fast hitch with drawbar. Engine needs work. Did not go into totally blind. I know the diesels can be expensive but I am in no hurry. Needs Pistons sleeves.

I like them original and love the idea of the switch over. Not bragging or complaining. Just sharing.

Thanks.

Nice looking old tractor. It looks like it very straight and clean for its age. Good luck with it and put some pictures when you do get it done.

I don't know. The teeth on the throttle quadrant are perfect with no wear found. Pedals look really good. It is a pretty straight machine but will need engine work. She told me the ta was good but ? At least it appears to have been inside most of its life. I always thought these engines were interesting but I always liked the pony start stuff too. Adds interest to a tractor with the process to start it and I will never farm with it. Food plots yes.

I am a fan and believer in the 3 valve IH engines. Way interesting. From TD20 turbo with 691cid, to a 48 MD and some between, I like them. Best of luck. Jim

Engine kits are out there if you have to do a complete OH parts will run around 4k. They are very neat engines, I personally really enjoy them. I have 2 md's and a smd and plan on many more down the road. It appears to be a nice solid original tractor and worth putting the money into. Good luck and enjoy. Jim.

For all of us guys out there this looks like it will be a bunch of fun. I don't have a shop too do this kind of stuff only little stuff like garden tractors. I would love to have a 400 or 450 beast. Love that handsome hood ornament.

From where the cat's setting om that 400's hood, it looks like it might have running and old Tom found a warm spot.

I did not know you were suppose to buy running tractors.
I do not farm, just enjoy old tractors. Would like to find a gas 400 for my next project since it was the first tractor I got to drive as a kid. Good luck with your project.

Yeah the overhaul will be pricey but my God it is knee deep in rubber and looks straight as an arrow. Nice find! That will be a very nice tractor when you are finished. You don't find those tractors in that nice of shape too often. Good luck.

I have a 400D and enjoy using it. The gas start system is easy to use. Mine has minor hydraulic issues caused by pump wear.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I will post pics of the extraction in a week or so. It has a belt pulley hookup on the right side and when I pointed it out she said. Oh wait. I have that. She went to another part of the shed and pulled out the pulley. Fun. My intention is to mess with it after I find all the pieces I need but have no intentions of repaint. Painted restored tractors are great but I would rather look at a worked tractor. I will probably even replace the filter covers with older looking stuff. Time and money.

Looks like a darn good find to me! I also didn't know that running tractors were supposed to be bought. My last (3) projects have all been non runners. '41 Case SC center exhaust (grandpa's tractor left to die in the woods), a 1941 John Deere A (Was sitting in a guys front yard as "art". I converted it to an Unstyled A, motor was stuck, block, crank and rods were shot), and my newest purchase - 1942 Farmall M (saved from the salvage yard, complete, motor loose, cutoff rear steel but rims are shot).... Every time I post something about dragging something out of the woods there are a few who think they are too far gone - but I'm not in it for the money. I get gratification out of seeing these old beasts breathe again after they have been left to die. I'm not in it for the money, but I try to keep cost-effectiveness in mind (with the exception of grandpa's Case). Sometimes my desire to see them saved gets in the way of economic smarts, though.

Have bought both running and not running. I enjoy old tractors. Right now I have more not running than running. My wife has called some of those items (running) self propelled scrap iron!

Dam you, saw it the other day, didn't have time to call about it, looked on Craig's for it again, couldn't find it, it looks fine, good luck with it, it was only 25 miles away from me
