The 400 diesel extraction

Picked up the 400 diesel I posted about last week. Wish I had gotten more pics but here is what I have. The tractor engine had been partially disassembled and will require some attention but overall a pretty good machine. Here are the few pics I took. Tractor had been kinda buried in a building so this was the first look at the back end. No jokes.

There ya go. All of the tractor was falling out of the pictures. He he From the photos it looks as if you found a real nice tractor. I want to take one home just like it. Looks like the standard light weight two point hitch. Have fun with that baby! I have a case of tractor fever!

I did not know they made different fast hitches. Learned something.

It seems I am getting close to a tractor per implement and this tractor screams two point stinger winch to me. Now I have to find one.

Thanks for the comments. On the throttle quadrant is this just a better design so it doesn't get chewed up or is this a good indicator. I am used to looking at letter series that are chewed up like crazy so like pedal wear thought this animal might have seen limited hours.

If the washer on the throttle shows no indication of being turned to a different place, it could be lower hours or replaced along with the notched strip. If the clutch pedal hasn't had something done to help it, most with normal hours will have the pedal fall over toward edge of platform or off the edge.
Looks like the cover that goes in front of battery box to hydraulic unit cover is on the fast hitch arm. Bad news on the fast hitch leveling crank. Looks like probably striped with bolts put in keeping it together.

The heavy duty one has two cylinders on it. The one in the back and another in the front. Also has the swinging draw bar. Not sure what tractors can take what but our 450 had one. Boy oh boy can you ever adjust a plow all over the place! They are about 1/3 heavier than the standard. Enjoy your toy!

Good catch on the leveling crank. I was wondering
what the tin thing on that arm was. Why would
someone bend the cover like that? Odd.

There were two styles of fast hitch. The early one had two cylinders one 3.5 x 8 on the rear to raise & lower, one small one on the side 2.5 x 8 to adjust hitch height (also tilt), this one attached with a thick mounting bracket attached to the torque tube with three bolts.
The later style " Fast Hitch with Traction Control" only has one large cylinder on back, and no small cylinder on the side. It has a large D-ring handle on the left side to adjust the amount of weight placed on the rear wheels by utilizing the draft of the implement.

It was my opinion that all 400s came from the factory with the fast-hitch that had the two cylinders. The fast-hitch with the single cylinder came equipped from the factory on all 450s. But the 450 style fast-hitch could also be dealer installed on 400s and even the MTAs. I think IH had a kit that was available to install it on the older tractors. But I have heard that some of the last 400s built could have had this hitch. Maybe someone can confirm if some of the last 400s came with 450 style fast-hitch. My 400 has the old style fast-hitch and the extra cylinder really helps to control the plow, especially when dropping the plow down in hard ground. Al

I am not real familar with a 400. Wasnt the 400 fast hitch differant than that? That looks like a 560 style fast hitch. Just curious. Bob

300, 400, 350 and 450 traction control hitch attachments used the hydraulic cylinder with stop pin like on his 400 for the ones before 60 series and some 60 series had the hitch with hydraulic cylinder like pictured installed without teladepth. Most leveling cranks are changed out to the later design by now, but first ones had the crank handle like picture. Some dealers had attachments stocked up and installed as wanted. Think IH dropped the early type as a complete attachment after they went to traction control type. Some 56 400 that got a hitch installed before leaving a dealer lot got the late type and some straight drawbar types of earlier ones ended up getting one installed later.
Also notice the original posters drawbar latch needs repair, it has a retainer to hold latched.

Didn't think to add that IH pictured that hitch on a 400. Electric plug in and rear light switched sides of battery box on 450 tractors.
