IH Fire Extingwisher.

I just aquired one of these in excellent shape had it polished Brass really looks good looking for a wall bracket for it is there anybody out there that has one to sell or a remake, I know this is not the correct forum for this but I have had it on the Tractor memorabilia site with no response at all.

If it is a Carbon Tet extinguisher, and empty, no issue. If it is full, and small brass cylinder with a T handle, do not use it. Dispose of the fluid at a Haz mat disposal site. The brass device is not toxic when the Carbon Tet is gone. The Carbon Tetrachloride in the device produces phosgene poison gas when heated by a fire. From The Net: Carbon tetrachloride is one of the most potent hepatotoxins (toxic to the liver), and is widely used in scientific research to evaluate hepatoprotective agents.[7][8]

Carbon tetrachloride has practically no flammability at lower temperatures. Under high temperatures in air, it forms poisonous phosgene. In organic chemistry, carbon tetrachloride serves as a source of chlorine.

boy, this sounds like something you would load in a 155mm shell and violate the Geneva convention

(quoted from post at 17:30:27 02/09/16) geez jim, and we used to use carbon tet as a cleaning fluid. sheesh....

I think we used it in grade school to kill butterflies before mounting them. (Hey, teacher made me do it.)

Our old chemistry instructor told us in college, he was in charge of some industrial safety program during WWII, and was demonstrating carbon tet fire extinguishers, how well they worked, how to use them... until the fumes rose up in the air and immediately killed stone dead the sparrows flying thru the overhead. Dropped stone dead.

I bought one myself a few weeks ago in a lot with some old oil cans. Pretty decent shape. Polished it up and have it hanging on the hearth by the woodstove. Hadn't even considered what to do with the material still in it. Sounds like its been in there so long it's already setup.

Carbon Tet is a volatile liquid. It is either there or it is gone. There is no drying up into something else. Imagine paint thinner as an example of its volatility. Much more toxic though. Jim

Good to know Jim...I did take the plug out of the bottom, nothing came out of it, but it did have a very noxious odor, and some type of set up powder in it. I put the plug back in and called it good.
