Hi guys. New member here. ( I was a member a long time ago) Found an old Farmall M I could afford last week. Going to take lots of tlc to get it running. Engine is free though, I guess that's a good thing. Carburator is kind of rusty inside, manifold is cracked. Rear rim is rusted away, mag is missing parts and some other little stuff wrong or missing.

My question is this, is that a crankcase vent coming out of the engine? The tube that comes out of it points down and then to the rear.

Paid just under scrap price for it.

That is a CC vent. It has a Metal strand separator in the top box like area. That tractor will be a reasonable fix. Welcome back. Jim

When you figure out what you need, let me know if you are interested in parts!! I have 1 whole tractor for parts, and a "parts machine" I am trying to sell. Have wheels, mag parts, manifold, everything... ;) e-mail if interested... .Bryce

I know I'l need a manifold and a magneto for sure.

Yes, it's the vent tube. Being in the south, that tube is highly likely to be clogged from dirt daubers or other insects building a nest in there.
Along with everything else you'll want to take that off and make sure it's clear.

I just had one off of a 300LP yesterday that was almost completely closed off.

Looks like someone had the head off to take a look under and didn't bolt the throttle linkage down. Looks to of set around a while after that.

Yessir, it does look that way. Everything I've loosened has just barely been tight, including the manifold. Figured it be hard to get loose but it was barely tight.

Only tractor I ever tried to paint was my H back in the 80's and the paint came from Central Tractor. The primer was yellow. The M in the picture looks like its dong the same as my H did - the red wore off and left the yellow primer. Both tractors are good example of what happens when you used cheap paint.

You could very well be right, but that looks like Cat yellow to me. Only reason I asked was Im reminded of a fellow on another forum who had a yellow M he restored.

Congradulations on your purchase. One little tip before you get to far into it and that is
to look under the rear of tractor between the axles, in front of rear end drain plug, and
make sure there are no cracks in casting. A common problem due to bull gear clearance being
minimal and any metal...ball bearing, gear part, even ice......can wedge under bull gear
and crack the case. I may be telling you something you know already. Enjoy it. Slider

Poor people have poor ways they say......and me being one of those I have painted my H, 460, and friends 450, super M, Ford Jubilee, etc. using Van Sickle brand paint in quart or gallon and spray cans. Now don't laugh but they all look real good. I first degrease then sand all I can. Brush on 1st coat, then 2nd if needed and use long srokes leaving less brush marks. I then use rattle [spray] cans to cover all brush marks. Even if you see none, they will show up some day if you don't spray. All of mine have stayed bright and shiny for years as long as they don't sit outside forever. I even sprayed clear coat on the 450 which seemed to help but it was a pain to apply. O, I got paint at Orscheln's. Just thought I'd let you know how I've done it and cost is under $100.
