Building one 706 from two?

Hello, I have two Farmall 706 diesels, both have the D282. Both tractors have serious problems and I'm thinking of making one from the two
and I'm looking for some input so I don't get halfway through and find out things don't fit.

First, the two tractors. The 1965 has a decent running engine, working TA, good 3 point, working PTO's, but has a cracked front bolster
(welded and working but weeps a little), and the rear end has serious issues (howls in higher gears, and the pinion shafts are loose like the
bearings are bad, also the splines where the brakes ride is badly worn). The 1966 has a horrible engine, good front bolster, unknown TA (too
much play in the linkage to make it shift), fast hitch, working PTO's, and the park brake won't hold under a heavy load.. Both tractors seem to
have all of their gears and ranges but (not surprisingly) shifting is an issue for both.

So I was thinking of taking the bolster from the '66, the engine and TA housing (which also holds part of the transmission?) from the '65, and
the rear end from the '66, and the 3 point from the '65 and assembling it together. First off, will this work? Is there a better way to do it? Thanks
for the help, Sam

I believe there are no compatibility issues. Look at the parts listing at caseih.com "Find parts by model" The parts listings and diagrams will have serial number breaks if the components are different. A good set of splitting stands (or two) and a cherry picker or overhead crane are valuable. Jim

Well now if it was ME i would fix them both . Fixing the shifters are easy and done many and while your fixing the shifters the one with the parl loc that won't hold then would be a good time to see WHY it is not holding ( does it have the old style over center park lock with the turn buckle ??) AS LONG A REV. DRIVEN GEAR IS NOT CHIPPED OR TOOTH MISSING AND the pawl is not chipped or tooth missing upgrade it to the spring loaded park loc and do the same on the other if not done already , Every 706 that came thru me has been changed . Ok so you have noise bull gears Fix them and if you have to switch them around, Ya can find a ft. bolster easy enough . Fix the easy one first then do the one with the most problems . Just working on it on weekends ya could have it done before the snow stops coming and the ground is dry enough to get on. Ya have a problem i can help ya . They are and easy tractor to work on .

Thank you. I ran into issues with brake parts before as the pinion shafts are different lengths. I will check on other selected parts. I think I have the offer of a shop with an overhead crane for the bulk of the work. Thanks, Sam

I was planning to rebuild the shifters to remove the free play. I see new covers and shafts available, is there much to be gained with these vs rebuilding / rebushing the old ones? I would rebuild them both but I only really need one and parts are hard to come by for these tractors in Eastern Canada. Does the park brake pawl and the upgrade require splitting the tractor or can it be done from the outside? Thanks, Sam

I'm in Nova Scotia. I've got enough with both of these tractors to make one really nice one, I could probably get the other one going but I don't think it's worth it to me. Thanks, Sam

NO , no splitting required IF reverse driven gear is not chipped or a tooth missing . The park pawl is mounted under the Range transmission cover . SO if your going to be working on fixing sloppy shifting there is no doubt that your having problems getting into rev. SOOOoooooo that cover has to come off anyway.Case I H has a update Pkg that will fit 06-66 and it makes it a Spring loaded deal , far better them the over center . NOW the down side to this new update is you do not just drop it into park while moving you MUST BE AT A DEAD STOP Or you will be splitting the tractor to replace rev. driven gear as it will plum clean the teeth off that gear when it drops in. Now as for a Bolster ya may just have to take a vacation on down here to the Buckeye state as i know of several places not far from the border that specialize in I H tractor parts . One is in Archabold Ohio and one out by Sterling ohio. Then there is one South west of Dayton Ohio. Lots of pieces and parts.

I think if I were to spend the money and time/labor to rebuilt shifters,I would go ahead and convert to 56 series shifters.About the same money(maybe even cheaper) and time. A whole lot better system.Btw,I've converted several(706/806'1206).I can help/advise/walk you through.

I have thought about that but I'm probably going to run into the same issue with parts. When doing that conversion I seem to have seen it mentioned that you need the entire steering pedastal that the shifters mount to. Is that correct or do you just need the linkage? Thanks, Sam
