torque specs

I am in the process of repairing the pto on a 300 utility. My question is the bolt torque specs when I replace the transmission cover. I looked up a generic torque spec chart on line for different grade bolts. The spec chart has oiled and unoiled, the oiled being a lower value. I always thought one torqued bolts lightly oiled to the grade spec.
When you torque main caps on a chevy engine at 90 or so ftlbs it was oiled. Knowing a chevy is a lot different than a 60 yr old tractor, bolt torque is bolt torque.

i would not get too carried away worrying about torque on a trans cover. those charts are usually just the actual bolt torque. you have to take into account the oiling. its not like your torquing rod or mains where the clearance depends on the bolt torque. engine bolts are oiled and specs are there.the rods are also sized while they are torqued together also. dont think there is too many mechanics that worry about trans cover torquing.its just comes naturally to a person. just like a head bolt, i can feel it stretching when a bad one comes along. that way dont have to let it break off .

well when working on OLD tractors a good tap and die set is a must and i am not talking a harbor freight made in Wong Fung FU CHINA , And don't be fussen about torquen bolts for a cover , clean the holes to the bottom and blow out chase the threads on the bolts and wire brush any rust or junk off give them a dab of oil and put the darn thing together , your working on and OLD tractor , If my wrist click it is between 35-45 Ft. Lbs if my elbow snaps it is between 85-95 Ft. Lbs. and if my shoulder pops then it is 150-165Ft. Lbs. close enough .
