H Engine Skip

Normally my 51H runs like a sewing machine...smooth. lately, however, under heavier load it will skip every so often. Any ideas how to trouble shoot this situation? Could a plug wire be failing and cause this to happen? If so, how do you check one, or do I just need to buy a new set?

My SM did that once.Tried everything to 'fix',nothing worked....Finally an old man suggest I replace the old (carbon/silicone) 'wires' with real wire wires. that was it! hasn't missed a lick since. So,check your plug wires.....

Check your spark first, make sure it jumps a nice 1/4" with blue spark on each cylinder.
I do not think it would hurt to check your valve clearances if this is a high RPM issue.
I do not remember if the power mixture is adjustable, if so try opening it up 1/2 turn.
Probably good idea to check resistance of plug wires.

If everything else checks out, check for voltage drop
on the wire feeding the coil. Our MTA acted as your
H does, & it turned out being the main wiring harness
where it goes over the valve cover. 2 clips hold the
harness there, & the front clip was where the wire to
the coil was down to 2 strands carrying all the coil
current.
When at high idle/ under load, the 2 strands couldn't
carry full current/ voltage.

Not stated if your H is 6 or 12 volt. If 12 volts, &
has a dropping resistor for the coil, that should be
checked also.

Open up the main jet a turn or 2, make sure its got a good flow of fuel to the carb, could have something blocking the outlet in the tank. Could just be time for a tune up.

mine would do that and even die, it took me a good while to figure out that I had a roaming bubble of water in the bottom of the fuel tank, every now and then it would land over the inlet....dry gas and keeping the tank full fixed the problem.

Remove one plug wire at a time while it is running. When you remove one and there is no change in the engine smoothness. there's your culprit.
