Engine support while tractor is split.

Thought I read something about this awhile ago but haven't been able to find it in a post.

Question: When splitting a tractor with frame rails (i.e. farmall M) what do you need to do to support the rear of the engine? I thought I read somewhere that you need to re-install a bolt on each side thru the engine plate or leave the locating pin in.

2nd question: If I am taking the rear engine plate off to repair the rear main seal, how do I support the rear of the engine? Or at that point do you just take the engine out of the frame rails?

Getting ready to do this and don't want to make things worse by breaking things.

You make some engine stands pretty easy, if you can get some M Farmall or similar side rails , set them up to the tractor before you spilt it, and you can see which holes to use, using some 7/16 bolts. When you have them on there get a 2 or 3 in piece of square tubeing, weld that piece between the [inside] of the said rails, but high enough to accomadate what ever jack you are going to use. That will hold up the front half. Place the rails so the ear's are down. Get your self or make 4 tapered blocks for the rear tires, I use a big floor jack under the belly.

Thanks, but I already have a splitting stand. I'm asking about the rear engine support to the frame rails. That is where the splitting stand attaches.

What I'm asking is after it is split and I take the rear engine plate off, what holds the engine up? If it is just the front engine mount, I assume that I have to pull the engine out entirely from the frame rails and front bolster.

If I was just doing the clutch or working on the fly wheel the rear plate could stay on, but since I have to take off the rear plate I want to know if I have to support the whole engine separately from the frame rails, which I think I do.

Just leave the bolts in place. In other words, unscrewed from clutch housing but still in the rear support plate. Some model Farmalls the frame was bolted to the side of the clutch housing and then you had to come up with different methods but not an M.

Some years ago I made an "A frame" with a trolly to hook a chainfall unto, one of the best things in the shop!!

That's what I did.

I may be missing what your asking but you have to have the engine off to get the plate off. Youll need a hoist of some type that's strong enough to hold the engine.

I gnored that part because you don't need the plate off to get the seal retainer off.

A buddy of mine got some all thread the size of the bolts and put them in and had 2 jacks and slid her apart. Replaced the clutch, pressure plate and bearings then slid her back together. He did this on a MD. Worked pretty good. He also did this an a H ..........................Kenny 8)
