784 Shifter Questions

I recently bought a 784 and it needs a few things repaired starting with the shifters. The I&T manual doesn't have a section on rebuilding these so I'm off on an adventure. It looks like I'll need to remove the fender and the seat platform to access the mechanism. Any advice before I start will be helpful.

Thanks,

Scott

Hi Scott, nice looking 784. You have the new style "H" pattern shifter vs the old style "Z" pattern. You can remove some the
platform under the seat fairly easily by removing a few nuts and bolts and the knobs off the control levers. Becareful of the
ground wiring on a bolt behind the seat. That one ground lug provides the ground to all the electrics on the rear of the tractor.

I have never worked on the "H" pattern shifter but have had the platform off one.
What is wrong with the shifters? Lo/Hi/Rev or 1-2 and 3-4 shift?

If you take the sheet metal cover off the trans tunnel and the one by the parking brake (missing in your photo) you can see all the linkage.

What is your issue?

I had an issue with getting stuck in 4th gear, solved easily once I pulled the tunnel cover and saw the linkage was loose...

Every bushing in the shifter mechanism is wore out which makes finding the gears difficult. I figured a few $ for bushings would help prevent a larger issue like getting the transmission jammed up. I did a search on this model tractor before buying it and the shifters seemed to be the 2nd or 3rd issue behind the brakes. The brakes work great except the parking brake which wasn't a surprise.

Thanks for the replies,

Scott
