1958 LO-BOY running too lean

Another small problem, besides my charging problem in another post in this forum. My carburetor seems to need an adjustment for the main metering jet, but does not have a needle or any adjustment for this. I have had to keep the choke handle pulled out about 2/3 of its total travel to make the engine run steady with a belly mower for a load. My carb has IH cast on the side, and the number 352063R-S1 stamped on the top. The S digit is not clear, could be a 6 or 8 or don't know. I have a Case/IH service manual for LO-BOY, shows carburetors with Main Jet but no needle. Any suggestions or discussion welcome! I am retired, so I have the time to tinker with this tractor if any one else has time to make suggestions. Better than watching TV, I think.

Your mystery letter is a "9".

You probably have a clogged main jet. There is a hex head on the side of the carb bowl. Unscrew it and the jet is built into the inner end of the part with the hex head. You can clean the jet with a small SOFT wire. Be careful to not enlarge the jet. Blow it out with carb cleaner. While you have it out, check gas flow out the jet opening. It should maintain a good flow. You may have dirt in the rest of the system -- sediment bowl screen, carb inlet screen, float valve, etc.

Hi, Jim:
Thanks for quick response. I can do as you suggest with no problem, maybe tomorrow. The hex head is easy to get to with carb on the engine. Much appreciated!

Success! I removed the hex head main jet and poked a thin tag wire through it and blew a little air through it. Before reinstalling the jet, I opened the gas tank shut-off and let some gas run through and dribble out the opening where the jet goes. This seemed to show system from tank to main jet is clear. Put jet back, tractor started fine and ran with no choke immediately.
Thanks for the excellent suggestion.
